Our ʻohana is asking for help after the recent Kona low storms caused devastating damage to our valley, leaving our home and community at serious risk.
During the storm, the river overflowed its banks and carved a new path directly through our ʻāina. In a matter of hours, we lost over 100 feet of land. Now, the main flow of the river runs through our property, threatening not only our home, but also the safety of our neighbors downstream. Our tiny hale now sits just six feet from the edge, at risk of being swept away in the next heavy rain. Debris from upstream has piled onto our land, while what was once ours is now washing into others’ homes below.
Our ʻāina is more than just where we live, it is a gathering place for our community. It’s where we host celebrations, educational programs, and bring people together through aloha. One of the most meaningful spaces was our outdoor kitchen, where we prepared food for family and community events. The storm took everything, our stoves, sinks, pots, coolers, and more. With this loss, we are not only facing damage to our home, but to a space that has served so many.
We are urgently seeking support to:
1. Bring in an excavator to help save the live of those who live below us.
2. Relocate our tiny hale to higher, safer ground
3. Rebuild our outdoor kitchen
4. Remove hazardous debris from the property
5. Repair and rebuild my parents’ home, which suffered severe roof flooding
These efforts are critical to ensure the safety of our ʻohana and our neighbors, and to begin restoring our ʻāina.
My parents have always been the first to show up for others, opening our home and putting the community before themselves. Even now, their greatest concern is everyone else’s safety. Their hale, over 100 years old, is filled with generations of memories, love, and resilience. They are doing everything they can to protect it, and the people around them.
If you’re able to support us, whether by donating or simply sharing our story, it would mean more than we can express.
Mahalo nui loa for standing with our ʻohana during this difficult time.
