Help Jiro Up

Our 2 years old Shiba Inu dog Jiro was hit by a pick-up truck on the expressway and was severely injured.

This Monday, Aug 10th, Jiro ran away through the front door of our house when we were heading out with our 7-month-old baby for a daily walk. He was so fast that nobody was able to catch him. Our house is very close to the expressway and when I ran out, I heard his screaming there. I ran as fast as I could and found him laying down on the ground on the side of the expressway and a truck parked next to him. The driver told me what just happened and gave us a drive to the nearest animal emergent care. The driver felt extremely bad although he tried to stop as much as he could and felt us as he is also an owner of two dogs. On our way to the hospital, Jiro was in such huge pain that I thought I was going to lose him.

When we arrived and stepped out of the truck, Jiro struggled a lot because he was so painful and gave me a few hard bites because I tried to hold him tight. I know he didn't mean to do that because he never did that to me in his life. I really felt heartbroken because it just told me how bad he felt.

Due to COVID-19, we were not allowed to accompany Jiro in the hospital and were only able to talk to the doctors by phone. At night, the ER doctor called us and said, “Jiro definitely had fractured pelvis, some internal bleeding, but he is not stable enough for us to do a full exam as he is suffering so much and in a lot of pain. You need to keep your phone on all the time tonight and if anything urgent happens, we will call you." At the moment, we were totally in a loss. We didn’t know what to do except to tell the doctor to do whatever they could to save Jiro.

"Jiro" means the second son of the family in Japanese. We gave him the name because we adopted a male orange cat 5 years ago and then 2 years ago Jiro came into our life. He brings so much fun and laughs to the family, and our 7-months baby boy really loved to watch Jiro and laugh loudly and our cat also loved chasing Jiro and playing with him for the treats. Jiro means a lot to our family and we can't imagine life without him.

I turned the sound volume to high on my phone and left it next to my ear when I went to the bed that night. It was not that helpful because I actually stayed awake all night. I even had the illusion that the phone was ringing when I was asleep, so I got up so many times finding nothing on my phone that night. No news is good news!

It turned out that Jiro had abdominal hernia and fractured pelvis for both sides in the next morning when the surgeon examined Jiro more thoroughly. This was a good news to us as we knew there was no issue with his lung and all he needed, according to the surgeon, was two surgeries – one to repair the abdominal hernia and the other to reconstruct fractured pelvis. It didn’t sound that bad until we knew how much he had during the surgeries. Jiro had the first surgery on Tuesday afternoon which lasted two hours to repair his abdominal wall. The other surgery, however, took six hours to complete. Until then we could not imagine how bad he was injured. He did well in both surgeries. We still could not imagine him in anesthesia for a total of eight hours! What a strong boy! 13 screws were put in his body. Poor little Jiro!

Jiro was then kept in the hospital for another two nights and got discharged this Friday afternoon after the doctor’s evaluation. The final bill came out to be $19,607.78. We never said NO to the doctors because we would never give up on Jiro. However, this bill still shocked us as our family does not have such a large amount of emergency funds.

With Jiro’s back home, we are experiencing financial difficulty as well as the burden to take care of a baby and a sick dog, not to mention that Jiro needs post-surgery special care with over three pages instruction from the discharge report.

There are so many for us to do, including using ice packs to cold compress his surgical areas, helping him turn side every 4 yours even during the night, massage his thighs at least three times a day. We only do more than less because we want Jiro to recover as much as he can. However, Jiro was still suffering. He did not eat anything, only started to drink sips of water since Friday night, started to vomit since then. His stomach is killing him. He refused to take any pills.

We decided to take him back to the hospital on Saturday morning and had the doctor check. The doctor was suspecting gastroenteritis and suggested to admit Jiro as soon as possible and hospitalize him for at least two nights. The doctor even suggested putting a tube into Jiro’s stomach to help him digest. That being said, another $5,000 bill is waiting for us. We struggled but decided to bring him back home to monitor for one more day as we want to keep Jiro comfortable and the bills from the hospital is already giving us a lot of burdens.

We hope Jiro will recover soon with the help of family and friends. We also know it is a challenge and a long way to go, as at least 8 weeks is expected for the rehabilitation, until when the doctor will check if he is ready to resume some daily activities. We will never give up on him. We will spend the next 8 weeks with Jiro and provide as much support as we possibly can.

I opened this GoFundMe page to help with his medical bills. We hope that we can get some love for Jiro to help him and us during the long road to recovery ahead. Any donation will be much appreciated and we will keep everyone posted for his photos and any new stories.
