My family and I are facing the unimaginable: we recently received a foreclosure notice on our home. The constant stress and anxiety have been overwhelming, and at times, it feels hopeless. Because of my disability, I rarely leave the house except when my mother is able to drive me somewhere. This house is my entire world, and my animals—especially my chickens—are my friends, my family, and my community. Since I got chickens three years ago, I’ve been the healthiest I’ve ever been. They give me a reason to get out of bed, even on my worst days, and have brought so much joy and improvement to my mental health.

I was completely blindsided by how bad things had gotten. My mother did not want to worry me, but now it feels like I’m locked in a glass box, watching my world fall apart. Losing our house would mean losing my animals too, and for me, that means being alone all day, every day. My mother simply does not make enough to cover all the bills, even with food stamps helping with groceries. We’re still in the process of trying to get disability for me, and while we have a lawyer helping, it’s a long road. My sister used to help with bills, but after she moved from Iowa to Texas, her boyfriend lost his job and she has been unable to find work since relocating. With her car totaled as well, no money has been coming in from them either.

The money we raise will go directly toward catching up on our mortgage, covering late fees, and, if needed, hiring a lawyer to help us keep our home. This support would help us stay on our feet until things stabilize and my disability benefits come through. My disability limits what I can do, and I’ve always felt helpless when my mother and sister were stressing about money. Maybe I can’t bring home a paycheck, but I can ask for help—which is something my mother hates doing. We have no extended family to rely on, so I’m reaching out to the kindness of strangers. Please, if you have any spare funds, anything helps. It’s the middle of winter in Iowa, and we have nowhere else to go. Thank you for your time and support.
