Help Oaklandia Cafe, a Black+Brown-Owned Business, and Feed Our Essential Postal Workers

For every $25 donation to Oaklandia Cafe, we will deliver a box of 10 pastries and cookies to the essential workers of the Postal Service.

Hello friends, family, and all others who have received this page,

I’m Joshua Pearl and I work for the USPS. A customer on my route had the misfortune of opening her Oaklandia Cafe a month before the pandemic hit. The cafe was closed for months. It only recently reopened, and, of course, there are bills and rent to catch up on. Latorra, Oaklandia Cafe’s owner, started a fundraiser, offering a box of 10 cookies and pastries for $25.

I saw the flyer for this and had an idea: Solicit donations, then use the proceeds to provide these pastry boxes to my colleagues—the overworked and essential postal workers. A win-win!

I know from direct experience how tough it is to start a business. I’d hate to see someone’s hard work and dedication come to an end due to circumstances way beyond her control. Latorra is a talented chef and gracious proprietor who deserves a chance to fulfill her dream.

Here’s how she described the situation to me:

I am a month and a half behind in my rent payment, and I have been using my own personal funds to keep the cafe afloat, but I am no longer able to do that. I have been running the cafe 6 days a week in my attempt to get ahead and try to save it.

I am the first in my family to ever own a business, and I am learning and making mistakes without anyone to seek guidance from. I am proud of my accomplishment, but I fear that I may fail. Failure right now would be devastating to my family. We put an enormous amount of time and money into this business, and to walk away with nothing is not an option at this point.

So here’s what we propose to do:

For every $25 in donations, we will deliver a box of 10 pastries and cookies to the essential workers of the Postal Service. Many of them are working long hours, 6 days a week, delivering large amounts of packages, as well as the usual mail and medicines. Your generosity will help both keep Oaklandia Cafe, a Black+Brown-woman-owned business, afloat, and will show some love and appreciation to your postal workers during this difficult time.

So, do two good things in one go! Help the Oaklandia Cafe thrive and survive, and bring delicious, nourishing baked goods to postal workers in our community.

Please tell your friends and family, and come by and try Latorra’s delicious offerings for yourself! See her menu here .
