Help Save Nathan's Life: Specialized Brain Treatment

My name is Natasha. I am a registered nurse, but first and foremost, I am a mother fighting for my child’s life.
Nathan is my eight-year-old son. He is kind, gentle, and full of curiosity. He loves school, laughs easily, and dreams about growing up — just like any other child. But our family lives with a fear no parent should ever have to carry.

Nathan was diagnosed with a large, complex Grade 4 brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM). This is a rare and life-threatening condition where abnormal blood vessels in the brain can rupture without warning. A bleed can cause permanent brain damage or be fatal.

When Nathan was first diagnosed, we were hopeful. We were told radiation treatment could help reduce the AVM over time. As parents, we trusted the process and did what we were advised, believing we were moving toward safety.
Instead, everything changed.

The radiation did not work. Instead, Nathan suffered severe complications, including significant brain swelling and the development of a pseudoaneurysm, which later ruptured and caused a brain bleed. What followed was every parent’s nightmare…a month-long hospitalization, constant uncertainty, and watching our child endure more than any child should. During this time, Nathan also developed a blood clot in his femoral artery, adding yet another frightening complication.

We were devastated. After everything he had already been through, we were told there were no remaining safe treatment options available in Canada. We were left in limbo… watching, waiting, and living with the constant fear that the next bleed could take his life.

As a nurse, I understood the medical reality.

As a mother, I refused to believe this was the end of hope for my child.

After relentless searching, countless consultations, and advocating for Nathan at every step, we were finally connected with Dr. René Chapot in Germany. Dr. Chapot is a world-renowned neurointerventional specialist who treats the most complex Brain AVMs in the world, cases others are told are untreatable. Dr. Chapot has developed a new, highly specialized embolic material and approach designed specifically for cases like Nathan’s. He believes this treatment can save Nathan’s life.

For the first time in a very long time, someone looked at Nathan’s scans and did not say, “There is nothing more we can do.”
He said, “I believe I can help your child.”

This treatment must be done in stages, allowing Nathan’s brain to safely adapt between procedures. Doctors estimate Nathan may need between 3 and 5 treatments, depending on how his brain responds.

Each procedure costs approximately $61,000 CAD, not including:
• Flights from Canada to Germany for Nathan and myself
• Accommodation during his hospital stay
• Local transportation, meals, and essential living expenses
• Possible additional medical costs

Each trip realistically costs $67,000 to $80,000 CAD, and none of this treatment is covered for Canadian residents.
We have set an initial fundraising goal of $250,000 CAD, which would help cover the first several stages of Nathan’s treatment. Because the exact number of procedures cannot be predicted in advance, this goal may be adjusted transparently if additional treatments are required.
Every single dollar raised will go directly toward Nathan’s medical care and the travel required to access this life-saving treatment.

Nathan has already endured more pain and fear than most adults ever will. He has fought bravely, even when the odds were stacked against him. All we are asking for now is the chance for him to live, grow, and have a future.
If you are able to donate, share Nathan’s story, or keep him in your thoughts, we are deeply grateful. Your kindness gives our son a chance …a chance that once felt impossible.
Please help us give Nathan the life every child deserves.

With all our hearts,
Natasha
