My heart is breaking as I write this, but I’m reaching out because my family desperately needs help.

My mom came to Nanaimo, BC on a tourist visa to share what should have been one of the happiest moments of our lives. She was here to meet her first grandchild, attend my college graduation, and celebrate my wedding. She is 69 years old and was healthy, active, and full of life before this trip.

Suddenly and without warning, everything changed.

She suffered a severe medical emergency. Her heart stopped, she turned purple, and she is now on a breathing machine in the ICU, fighting for her life. Watching someone you love go through this is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

Because my mom is a visitor to Canada, her medical care is not covered by provincial health insurance. I purchased travel insurance for her, but the coverage is only $25,000 — an amount that is nowhere near enough for what she is facing. Her ICU stay alone costs $13,100 per day, not including medications, procedures, and other critical care expenses. The bills are growing faster than we can comprehend.

This is a true emergency. We are doing everything we can to focus on her recovery, but the financial burden is overwhelming. We are asking for help so we can continue her life-saving treatment without the constant fear of how we will afford it.

My mom is strong. She is a loving mother and grandmother who came here full of joy and excitement for her family. We are holding onto hope and praying for a miracle.
