The Invisible Victim of the Southgate Landslide
Where is the outrage? Where is the helping hand?
Right now, Sanitation District 1 (SD1) is tied up in a massive lawsuit over the landslide that caused structural damage to three condominium buildings in Southgate, Kentucky. But in the shadow of this legal battle, there is a forgotten victim. Her name is Kathy.
Kathy didn't cause the landslide. Her condo didn't suffer a single crack. Yet, the landslide and the resulting litigation are destroying her financially.
Because the entire complex is trapped in a legal deadlock, banks refuse to let Kathy touch the equity she spent her life building. The litigation has completely paralyzed her borrowing power—but it hasn't stopped the bills. It hasn't stopped the threat of financial ruin.
Why is a 59-year-old woman being forced toward homelessness because of a fight she isn’t even a party to?
In theory, "consumer protection" sounds great. In reality, it’s proving to be a hollow phrase.
The powerful entities involved simply shrug and say, "We're sorry, but..." while an innocent person's life is dismantled through no fault of her own.
This is wrong. There has to be a lender out there willing to look at the facts and grant a fair loan on her untouched equity. There have to be community members who care enough to step up, donate, and help her bridge this gap until a court finally decides what happens next.
Kathy didn't cause the landslide, and she didn't file the lawsuit. She shouldn't have to lose her home because of them. Where is the help?
