My grandma has always been the heart of our family, and now she’s facing one of the toughest challenges of her life. She has onset dementia, and recently my mom and I discovered that she owes several years of back taxes. I’ve been a college student for the last four years, so I haven’t been able to work much, and my mom has been unable to find a job since she was laid off two years ago. We all live together in my grandma’s home, taking care of each other as best we can. We had no idea about the back taxes until now, and if we’d known sooner, we would have done everything we could to help. But right now, we simply don’t have the means to pay this debt. We only have 90 days left in the home before it is repossessed.

Paying off these back taxes is critical for our family. My grandma’s home isn’t just a house—it’s her childhood home, built by my great grandfather in the late 1940s and early 1950s. If we can’t pay what’s owed, we risk losing the house and becoming homeless. This home is the only place we have, and it holds so many memories and so much history for our family. Keeping it means preserving a piece of our past and providing stability for my grandma as she faces her health challenges.
