Hello,
My name is Marlin
Our family are from Gaza. While I, am lucky enough to now live in safety in Birmingham with my husband and three beautiful children, the rest of my family remain trapped in Gaza, suffering because of the war.
I am writing this appeal on behalf of my father who, earlier this year, was robbed of his sight by a bomb blast. When I heard the news, my heart was broken.
We know we are not alone in our suffering but to us my father, Bassam Sobhi Alashi, is not just another statistic in a war that has claimed so many lives and livelihoods. He is the heart and soul of our family.
He is our support in our trials and trauma and, on a purely practical level, the main provider for my mother and younger siblings, the youngest of whom is just 16 years old.
My father is a skilled carpenter, known for his kindness, generosity and warm smile. But without his sight he can do nothing. Not being able to see puts him at very great risk from the war. In normal life, his lack of sight would be problematic, in a war zone, it could be fatal.
Gaza is a place of great despair but in our story, there is still a glimmer of hope. Medical experts believe my father’s sight can be restored and, as the treatment is not available inside Gaza, he has even been granted permission to leave Gaza to seek treatment. That treatment (corneal transplantation and cataract surgery) is available here in the UK.
But it doesn’t come cheap. We have worked out estimated costs including transport and treatment and need to raise £10000, money we simply don’t have. We know that saving my father’s sight would not change the immensity of suffering in Gaza, but for our family, it would change everything.
Please consider donating and sharing this page with others. I dream of my father being able to see the faces of my beautiful children and of him being able to help rebuild our home in Palestine when this terrible war ends. Please help us bring light back into my father’s life.
If we raise more than the required amount for my father’s transport, treatment and care, any excess would be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP),who provide vital life-saving care in exceptionally challenging conditions for victims of the war in Gaza. If we do not raise enough to be able to get my father the treatment we are seeking, anything we have received will also be donated to them.
What is needed?
Estimated Cost:
£2,895 per eye Corneal transplant surgery
£230 Medical consultations & diagnostics

£1,000 - £1,500 Flights for patient & carer (my mother)

With deep gratitude,
Marlin AlAshi (Abu Hasira).
