Legal Fees to Save My Dad's Estate

Donation protected

After a year of grieving, stress, patience, bumps in the road, more stress, more patience, some incompetence, ridiculous Greek bureaucracy, less patience, even more stress, and multiple trips to the Motherland, the growing costs of trying to secure my father's estate has led me to a point of desperation.

My father died of a massive heart attack sometime before August 15th - which happens to be one of the biggest holidays in Greece (during peak travel and right when things shut down for a few weeks) - that required an impressive effort of coordinating funeral arrangements, finding childcare for my children while I was gone, and finding an attorney and starting the inheritance process all while in Greece for a week (no easy task considering the time of year and timeframe). My family here in Greece have been amazing in their effort to help me coordinate and pay for everything, but the amount of time and money they have contributed towards his funeral costs, grave, taxes, and lawyer/translation/notary/court fees, as well as my own lawyer, document, and travel fees to sign papers, open accounts, and TRY and work the system has all added up and become a financial burden... all to "inherit" what should be easily and rightfully mine. (not in Greece, apparently)

I am in Greece for the third time for his one year memorial and with the original plan of "accepting" the will/inheritance (key to house/deed,etc) and the original expectation of gaining access to his flat to begin the arduous process of cleaning and organizing his things in order to begin renovation (its current state is not up to code and is unlivable) in order to move on with either selling or renting, rather than sitting and rotting. He did not have much, but it's enough to help (once I have access to it) and worth saving and restoring. It has come to a point that the other tenants of the building have now become frustrated with the current state of his apartment and may come after me legally. The problem with that is, the apartment has been in the control of the courts/state since his death in August 2017 with zero access to clean or maintain which has turned it into a health hazard. It can NOT remain in the state it's currently in.

I'm now at the mercy of the courts and Greek holidays, yet again, which brings basic municipal and administrative functionality to a halt and am forced to extend my stay in order to settle this once and for all (as opposed to yet ANOTHER trip). This is bringing on added expenses to rush documents, translate, and pay yet more taxes in order to accept and move on. Not to mention, August is peak travel... (frequent travelers know what that means).

Any help is appreciated and will go towards paying fees, paying back family and friends, and helping with expenses back home for the care of my children (one of which is special needs and requires special care and attention). I assure you that, while it may sound luxurious to be in Greece, I am not on holiday and it is not a luxury to have to deal with estate law in a country with a broken system.

As a potential added reward/bonus........... Maybe I can work out some sort of timeshare system for (responsible/trustworthy) donors who want to visit Thessaloniki who might need a place to stay smack in the middle of the city, close to the boardwalk, city center, and tons of museums and restaurants once the place is up to snuff. Think of it as an investment!

Or some Greek chocolates as thank yous for now?

I'm spitballing.

I don't want his estate to go to the state.

I'm desperate.

Thank you!
