I’m reaching out because my beautiful 13-year-old cat, Mirage, is critically unwell, and I’m terrified of losing her.

I’ve had Mirage for 12 years. She is my only family here in Australia and means absolutely everything to me. She has been my constant companion, my comfort, and my home.

On Wednesday night, I knew something wasn’t right. She wasn’t coming for cuddles, wasn’t interested in food, and seemed almost repelled by it. She kept going from water bowl to water bowl, looking like she wanted to drink but unable to. She just wanted to sleep and wasn’t herself at all.

By 3am Thursday morning, I rushed her to the emergency vet. I’ve since been back multiple times.

Blood tests initially didn’t look too alarming, so we tried managing things at home with pain relief and an appetite stimulant. There was a small improvement — she showed a little interest in food and water — but it didn’t last. She deteriorated again and had to be admitted.

Mirage is now on IV fluids because she’s dehydrated and hasn’t eaten properly in five days. An ultrasound hasn’t shown a clear cause, but her bloodwork indicates a serious liver issue. The vets are currently trying antibiotics to see if it’s an infection.

If she doesn’t start eating on her own very soon, she will need a feeding tube placed. If the antibiotics don’t help, she will need a liver scan to determine whether there is a tumour.

So far, her care has already cost $3,500.

If she requires a feeding tube and continued hospitalisation, the vet has warned that the total could reach $10,000.

I am doing everything I can for her, but I’m overwhelmed and scared. I just want her home, healthy, and safe.
