March 27th, 2026 note:
There has been a lot that has happened since first finding Coba & Maya at the Tulum Train Station.
Unfortunately, Maya (Guera) succumbed to her advanced heartworm the day she was taken off the streets by Alma Animal. She was a big part in showing Coba that he could trust us - they were deeply connected to each other.
While Coba was very depressed to start, he’s been able to gain weight, finish his quarantine phase and start his heartworm treatment.
At the moment, we are pausing his heartworm treatment due to his confirmed pulmonary hypertension, caused by the long-term damage from the worms mixed with the die-off from his first heartworm treatment.
We are currently fundraising for the cost of treatment for the next 6 months.
A HUGE thank you to everyone that has helped him get here. It would not have been possible to get him this far without your support ❤️
Please see the Gofundme updates for a full report on Coba’s progress and situation.
~ ORIGINAL POST ~
Hi, my name is Alix, and I’m fundraising to help Maya & Coba, two abandoned street dogs I found starving near the Mayan Train Station in Tulum.
Both dogs are severely underweight, dehydrated, and covered in ticks. Despite their condition, they are incredibly gentle and loving. I have been visiting them every day to make sure they have food and water, but they urgently need proper veterinary care, tick and parasite treatment, sterilization, and safe temporary shelter so they can recover.
Local rescues in Tulum are under tremendous pressure right always, but they have still stepped in to help in meaningful ways because we are able to help support them with helping Maya & Coba:
The Tejido has been helping me plan the next steps for their medical recovery, and Tulum Animal Rescue and Alma Animal have been supporting by sharing Maya and Coba’s story on social media to help increase their chances of finding a foster.
The estimated total cost for their care is $600 CAD, and I’m hoping to raise $500 to cover the majority of their treatment and recovery needs.
Your contribution will help cover everything they need — vet care, medication, transportation, food, and emergency housing — so these two sweet souls can finally be safe and start healing.
I will be updating the expenses as they come along. Thank you so much for helping give Maya & Coba a real second chance at life.
