Help Save Max the Therapy Dog

On the morning of May 25th, Memorial Day weekend, Lisa's precious therapy dog, Max, was viciously attacked by a coyote. While out for a morning walk in a nearby park, a coyote suddenly appeared from behind some brush along the path and snatched Max in his jaws. The coyote tried to make a getaway but Lisa yelled loudly and clapped her hands, startling the coyote into dropping Max. Max summoned the strength to pick himself up and walk back toward Lisa, who realized he was badly wounded and covered in blood. We rushed Max to a nearby 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic clinging to hope. Max was panting heavily in the passenger seat next to me, in searing pain, but fighting for his life. It was clear that he wanted to life.
The doctors performed emergency exploratory surgery and found that his right lung was seriously damaged, he had 5 broken ribs, a punctured diaphragm, severe muscle damage and needed a blood transfusion. Before turning him over, they were worried that his left lung and organs may have also been damaged by the attack. If that were the case, there was no hope. But thank God, Max's left side was ok and his organs had no signs of damage. The doctors removed two of his right lung lobes and worked hard to stop the bleeding. The doctors initially had little hope for his survival but have been astonished by his strength and will to live. His nickname around the hospital is “spunky”.

Max just celebrated his 6th birthday. We got Max as a therapy puppy for my wife Lisa, who had been suffering with Lupus for more than 5 years. At that time, Lisa was confined to a wheelchair and barely clinging to hope herself. She was in severe, non-stop nerve pain, barely able to get out of bed, and her internal organs were at serious risk of failure. She was forced to undergo chemo therapy (along with a daily cocktail of more than 20 pills) to suppress her immune system, which ultimately led to pre-cancer in her one of her breasts and all sorts of other health issues. Lisa underwent so many medical procedures that we lost count. Her faith in the Lord, her family and her cute therapy dog, Max, were the only things that gave her hope and joy.
But thanks to the Lord, and the faithful prayers of our family and friends, Lisa was healed from Lupus two years ago. It is nothing short of a miracle that she has returned to full health after struggling for over eight years. And her faithful little Yorkie Terrier, Max, was by her side every step of the way. Their hearts are bound together and we are compelled to help him heal the way he helped Lisa heal.

Last night, we had the joy of visiting with Max at the hospital. Though on heavy pain meds, he was alert and overjoyed to see us. He is now in stable condition and the doctors have hope in a full recovery. But he is not out of the woods yet. Max still likely needs more blood transfusions and a few more days in the hospital.
When they presented us with the medical bill, we were floored. The cost was over $18,000...How could we afford to pay this? But we could not let Max down after he fought so hard for life, and fought so hard to save Lisa’s life. He brought joy to our entire family during a difficult season of life. We owe it to him to help him life. Please, help us save Max.
