Help save Luis’ life

Luis Gerardo Pruneda-Martínez is my cousin, who used to be a happy, promising young man about to start university, but is now left paralyzed and bedridden and in need of lung surgery to save his life.

In 2006, at the age of 20, he was in a terrible car accident in which he was not the driver. However, he was the one who received the worst impact. In this accident Luis suffered terrible injuries such as open fractures in his legs, but he survived and was conscious.

Unfortunately during surgery a clot was released and ended up lodged in his brain, leaving him unable to speak or move properly since.

My aunt, who is a single mother, has dedicated her life to taking care of him. Through these 17 years she learned to provide the necessary care at home, rehabilitation exercises, find transportation and take him to physical therapy. Luis's room was transformed into a room with a hospital bed and everything necessary to support his rehabilitation. She hired people and trained them in proper care for Luis. My aunt has worked all her life and dedicated all her free time to taking care of Luis.

A few weeks ago Luis got sick, he was coughing and had a fever and the doctor who saw him at home diagnosed pneumonia and treated him accordingly. His condition did not improve and in the end he was hospitalized as he had difficulty breathing. After a CT scan and blood tests it was determined that Luis had fluid in his right lung and surgery was performed to drain it. The extracted fluid was infected and the doctors saw there was fibrosis in his lung. The doctor in charge recommended surgery to prevent the lung from collapsing.

My aunt has used up her life savings to try and pay for his hospital stay so far but the expenses keep adding up and she cannot afford to pay for this surgery that is essential to save his life.

To top it all off, my aunt has not been able to go to work and is at risk of losing her job. She does not have health insurance and is desperate.
