Help Save Kelvin Afidhu's Life
Donation protected
I first met Kelvin Afidhu Kamugisha in 2013 at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, India; My parents were there undergoing treatment while he was there waiting for a kidney transplant. His older sister, Khadija, had joined him from Tanzania to be his kidney donor. That was when I learned it was not Kelvin’s first transplant surgery. Five years earlier, at just age 13, Kelvin had his first kidney transplant at Madras Medical Mission (MMM) in Chennai, India-and the donor was his brother, Faisal. It was actually a very successful transplant surgery that kept him alive for 5 years until that second kidney transplant when I met him at Apollo New Delhi. Unfortunately, it was due to issues related to follow-up medication that rejection occurred both times. The bright side is that we now know the source of the rejections, but also once again, Kelvin's life depends on a third kidney transplant surgery.
Thankfully, we have just received news that another relative, Kelvin's cousin- Godfrey Kamugisha, has kindly volunteered to donate his kidney to help save Kelvin's life. I cannot emphasize enough what Kelvin's life means to a lot of people. To know Kelvin is to love Kelvin. You will never find a more kind, loving and generous spirit on this earth than Kelvin. With all the challenges he has faced from a young age, his resilience is nothing short of awe-inspiring. He is a special young man and truly, a gift to this world.
With your support, Kelvin will be able to have this surgery back in Chennai at Madras Medical Mission under the care of Dr. Saravanan, who initially operated on him in 2008 when Kelvin was a young orphan. Dr. Saravanan has grown to like Kelvin a lot, and assures us of success. Your support will also help ensure that follow up medication will strictly guard against future rejection.
Kelvin's family is urgently requesting financial support from friends and well-wishers everywhere to help them meet all medical expenses and other affiliated travel costs from Tanzania to India. Kelvin has already traveled to India by himself. We have spoken to Dr. Saravanan; He said they will first need to do a graft surgery for dialysis. This will require Kelvin's sister, Khadija or his brother, Ahmed, to go to Chennai from Tanzania to be with him. The second step will be for the kidney donor to travel there and prepare for the final procedure, which is the actual transplant.
If you would like to assist with their financial burden, any donation through GoFundMe (or MPESA in Tanzania using his brother, Faisali Kamugisha's number: +255752465398) would be greatly appreciated. All funds raised will go directly to Kelvin's medical costs and related travel expenses for Kelvin’s sibling and Kelvin's donor. Given that kidney transplant alone costs not less than USD15,000, we hope to raise at least USD20,000 in order to cover additional costs that includes the graft surgery, travel, and maintenance for the family while in India!
With your support, I believe we can do it.
Sincerely,
Karumuna Augustine Kaijage (on behalf of Kelvin's family and friends)
