I am creating this GoFundMe for my brother, John Nordquist, whom I love very much. John has struggled with addiction from early in his adolescence -- for a time he even struggled with heroin addiction. These days his substance of choice is alcohol, his relationship with which has truly caused enormous harm, and stands in the way of John leading a productive and fulfilling life.
The good news is that John is finally ready to give up alcohol and begin his journey of healing and recovery. The only thing that stands in his way is the cost of treatment. Our family is working closely with experts in the mental health field who recommend a rigorous path to recovery -- one that will likely involve detox/rehab, intensive outpatient care, a sober living facility, and regular out patient care. Even with partial scholarships we are looking at $14,000 for rehab, $3,000 for the various levels of outpatient care, and $3,000 for the sober living facility, and continued therapy. This will all be due in the next 30 days or so.
Our family has been told that going through these layers of care affords the patient the most success when battling addiction. And while we are grateful for state run institutions because they have saved John's life a number of times before, they do not offer the mental health treatment that John will require to be prosperous in this process. They do not teach healthy coping methods, they do not work with you on childhood trauma, and they do not care to stop you from walking out of the facility.
If you know John you know how wonderful he is. The cliche “would give you the shirt off his back” is true of my brother, because he genuinely cares about the humans around him. He is always quick with a joke to lighten the mood, and quicker to defend those he loves. He is father to two beautiful boys: Dean and Skyler and they are his real inspiration for getting clean and healthy.
Like many families who are fighting similar battles, we do not have the funds to be able to put John through these prescribed layers of care -- we need financial support from our community. Anything you can give would help ease the burden of these expenses, and in all likelihood, help save my brother's life. And if you cannot donate now, we would really appreciate a share on social media. Because I know without a doubt, that unless we band together, and help John now, he will certainly die of this terrible disease.
