Please meet John Carlos "JC" Vega, a 10-year-old boy who lives in the Philippines. JC was born with a rare birth defect called bladder exstrophy (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/bladder-exstrophy/symptoms-causes/syc-20391299)  JC's family lives in impoverished conditions in Manila and has not been able to provide him with the medical care he desperately needs.

A surgery attempt when JC was a baby failed and he was forced to continue living with his bladder on the outside of his belly, causing incontinence and excruciating pain. JC's situation is dire and getting worse every day. He experiences regular serious infections. His outlook is grim. The longer the bladder remains on the outside of his body, the higher the risk of him developing bladder cancer at a young age.

But we can help him! The world's best surgeon for this condition, Dr. John Gearhart at Johns Hopkins Hospital, has graciously and generously agreed to perform JC's life-saving surgery pro-bono! Is is scheduled for November 6th of this year. Nonetheless, the costs of the expected 2+ months hospital stay and aftercare as well as the family's travel to the US are astronomical.
