CRPS (chronic regional pain syndrome) is a rare and incurable disorder. It has been nicknamed the "suicide disease" because it is the most painful medical problem known to man and, so far, conventional therapies and medication have no effect on a patient's suffering. On top of the unrelenting pain, it comes with unbearable fatigue and limited mobility. Over the past several years, I've seen it turn one of my dearest friends into a mere shell of her former vibrant and fun loving self. She can no longer care for herself or her son, even with assistance from others.
Heather has been given an opportunity to attend the Spero Clinic in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It is a 3 month treatment program far from her home in Florida that will put her disease into remission so she can resume a normal life. She hasn't been able to work in years, and she wants off disability so she can support her family financially. She wants to be able to walk and exercise again. She wants to be able to have fun with her son. He deserves a mother who is healthy, happy, and strong. Right now, she can't even cook meals for him or help with his homework. This groundbreaking therapy is long and intense and will require her to be absent from her son for 12 weeks. It is a sacrifice they are both willing to make for a chance at a life they both need so desperately.
