Help Save Green Island Ice Arena

River City Youth Hockey (RCYH) has a rich tradition of building strong, confident, respectful youth through the camaraderie & community of sport, regardless of socioeconomic background or living situations that may be prohibitive to participation. We believe that hockey is a powerful vehicle for teaching life lessons, building confidence, instilling a strong work ethic and grit, and learning what it means to work as part of a team. As the old adage goes: “It takes a village to raise a child.’ We strongly believe in building a community that cares for the children who choose to come play hockey with us.

Many cities & municipalities have been feeling strain & financial hardships well before the emergence of COVID-19. The city of La Crosse had made the decision to close Green Island Ice Arena in 2020, unless a managing party stepped up. Faced with the very real possibility of the rink permanently closing its doors to hockey, sled hockey, curling, figure skaters, etc, the River City Youth Hockey Association made the difficult decision to take on the responsibilities of saving the rink. RCYH is a parent-run, volunteer driven association. Many of our members skate with us because we have traditionally been able to keep costs low by offering scholarships, fundraising, and cutting costs wherever possible. RCYH offers hockey equipment at no cost to all our young skaters, and we supported them with free gear throughout their Mite journey. The organizations’ philosophy is to never turn away a kid that wants to play hockey and can’t afford it, and RCYH keeps registration fees significantly lower than many area associations. Faced now with, not only running a hockey association, but the vast undertaking of running an entire facility, RCYH is reaching out for financial support.

RCYH is confident that we can weather the storm we find ourselves in, but recognize that we will encumber financial need before we can build up both a thriving hockey association and ice arena. If you believe, like us, in the power of sport in the development of well rounded, strong, confident, respectful kids, then please consider a donation to help us build our vision. We want to be able to continue our mission of providing sport for all who wish to participate, by building a thriving community around and on the ice.  Please help us save Green Island.
