Help us to save Efigenia from Breast Cancer

Hi, my name is David. My wife, Efigenia, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in December 2021. She is only 32 years old. We are in this country as students from Colombia. We have no family support and are trying to navigate this difficult and challenging situation. 

We both arrived in Australia two years ago seeking better opportunities. Efigenia is studying English and working as a nanny, while I have been working in construction to help support us financially. 

As holders of student visas, we are not eligible for Medicare. Although our student insurance and doctors have both tried to lower rates and accommodate payment terms as much as possible, the high cost of the treatment that can save her life is still very much out of our reach. 

Efigenia’s cancer is progressing. She has an intervention that confirmed the cancer is Stage 1, micro-invasive and HER2 positive. As a result, it is an aggressive type that is at great risk of metastasis; the only solution now is to undergo a 12-month long chemotherapy treatment. This must begin in March 2022 at the latest. 

This essential treatment will cost $38,000 AUS dollars. We have now reached the moment when we have no more savings to fund these medical expenses. Every dollar we had carefully put aside during the last few years has now been spent on Efigenia’s GP consultations, hospital stays and appointments, medications, blood tests, scans, and the two major surgeries. 

She is no longer able to work due to her illness. My job forces me to be away from our home, I am away from her from Monday - Saturday, and she will need constant care. 

This is our resort, our hope to save her life. Efigenia is a beautiful, bright, positive and wonderful person who has dedicated her life to others. Now it is our turn to take care of her and give her the best chance of living - to have children, to see them grow, and to live life with her family and friends. 

It was not easy to make our very personal story public, but we have to try to find a way forward to fund her chemotherapy. By reaching out in this way, we hope that there are people out there who will stop for a moment and consider helping a young family they don't know at the most difficult moment in their lives. We hope you will be one of them.

Hola, mi nombre es David. Mi esposa, Efigenia, fue diagnosticada con una forma agresiva de cáncer de mama en diciembre de 2021. Solo tiene 32 años. Estamos en este país como estudiantes de Colombia. Estamos tratando de navegar por esta difícil y desafiante situación.  

  

Ambos llegamos a Australia hace dos años buscando mejores oportunidades. Efigenia está estudiando inglés y trabajando como niñera, mientras que yo he estado trabajando en la construcción para ayudarnos financieramente. 

 

Como titulares de visas de estudiante, no somos elegibles para Medicare. Si bien nuestro seguro estudiantil y nuestros médicos han tratado de reducir las tarifas y acomodar los términos de pago tanto como sea posible, el elevado costo del tratamiento que puede salvarle la vida todavía está muy fuera de nuestro alcance. 

 

El cáncer de Efigenia está progresando. Ya se sometió a una intervención que confirmó que el cáncer es en estadio 1, microinvasivo y HER2 positivo. Como resultado, es un tipo agresivo que tiene un gran riesgo de metástasis; la única solución ahora es someterse a un tratamiento de quimioterapia de 12 meses de duración. Esto debe comenzar en marzo de 2022 a más tardar.  

  

Este tratamiento esencial costará $38,000 dólares AUS. Ahora hemos llegado al momento en que no tenemos más ahorros para financiar estos gastos médicos. Cada dólar que habíamos reservado cuidadosamente durante los últimos años ahora se ha gastado en consultas de médicos, estadías y citas en el hospital, medicamentos, análisis de sangre, exploraciones y las dos cirugías principales. 

  

Ella ya no puede trabajar debido a su enfermedad. Mi trabajo me obliga a estar lejos de nuestra casa, estoy lejos de ella de lunes a sábado, y ella necesitará atención constante. 

  

Este es nuestro recurso, de esperanza. Efigenia es una persona hermosa, brillante, positiva y maravillosa que ha dedicado su vida a los demás. Ahora es nuestro turno de cuidarla y darle la mejor oportunidad de vivir: tener hijos, verlos crecer y vivir la vida con su familia y amigos.  

  

No fue fácil hacer pública nuestra historia personal, pero tenemos que tratar de encontrar una manera de avanzar para financiar su quimioterapia. Al llegar de esta manera, esperamos que haya personas que se detengan por un momento y consideren ayudar a una familia joven que no conocen en el momento más difícil de sus vidas. Esperamos que seas uno de ellos.
