My name is Sylvia Greeney Morris, and I live in a little retirement community in Florida. My dear friend and neighbor Donna Sabia, a hardworking widow in her sixties, is facing the loss of her house and potential homelessness due to circumstances completely outside of her control.
Her home was badly damaged during Hurricane Milton in 2024. She waited for months for the man she hired to initiate repairs to finish his other projects in the park, only to have park management determine that he was not a licensed contractor and escort him off the property. The eviction attempts against Donna due to the status of her repairs began.
Donna submitted the information about two additional licensed contractors to management, but they refuse to approve either one until she pays all of the park’s attorney fees. And, unless she does so, she faces immediate eviction.
Donna is already working on selling her Harley and her precious tribal jewelry and artifacts, but the proceeds would be a drop in the bucket compared to what’s actually needed. The attorney’s fees currently stand at $6000, but we fully expect the amount to increase, perhaps significantly. It’s happened before. And complete repairs to her house are estimated at $9 - 10,000.
We’re all senior citizens here on limited incomes, and so we’re also limited on how much we can do. But we can do this. If you have a soft spot for squishy grannies, for veterans’ widows, for cheerful Native crones, for biker chicks with hearts of gold, and for all-around good people, you can do this too. And I hope you do.
