Help save Diego's collapsed lungs
Donation protected
This morning Diego was breathing extremely heavily, with his respiratory rate reaching 70 breaths per minute. We took him to the veterinary ER at the Animal Medical Center here in New York, and we learned that his lungs have partially collapsed. As a result of underlying chronic asthma (common in older cats), he experienced a bilateral pneumothorax with a small amount of internal bleeding.
Here's the video we took before we brought him in:
He's spending the night in the ICU with an oxygen cage pumping 40% oxygen into the air, and will be given a bronchodilator to help him breathe. They've performed chest x-rays and blood tests, but they will need to run more tomorrow, potentially including an endotracheal wash and blood transfusion if necessary.
As a result, we've already spent $626.46 on medical expenses, and there will be another estimated $4,295.53 of expenses over the next 24 hours, adding up to $4,921.99.
Diego is 13 years old and super tiny--he weighs just under 7 pounds. He's one of the friendliest cats you'll ever meet. I adopted him six years ago from the Humane Society, and through all the ups and downs of my life, he has been my one constant.
I know pet medical costs are a luxury, and many people can't afford to take their animal to the vet at all. I also know Diego is getting up there in years. But he's an indoor cat with no major medical issues, and if I can cover all these veterinary bills, he'll make a full recovery and likely has another five good years ahead of him. If this money can give Diego five more healthy years of life, it means the world to me to raise it.

I deeply appreciate any amount you can give--if we raise more than we need, anything extra will go straight into Diego's future vet bills. Thank you so much.

Here are Diego's medical bills so far. The initial costs:

And the estimated upcoming costs, 50% of which we had to pay up front today:

In total we've paid $2,774.25 up front: the $626.46 cost of procedures done when we brought him in, plus $2,147.76, which is half of the $4,295.53 they're expecting to require for the procedures they'll be doing while he stays at the hospital overnight. We will pay the other half of that estimated $4,295.53 once everything is completed.
