Delta is a restaurant that’s been in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood since the 1950’s. It a small family owned restaurant. The owner, Virginia (Penny) Revels, has fallen on hard times since Covid and now is behind on her rent, bills and other expenses. She’s not one to ask for any help and during the small business loan period she applied for all of them and did not receive one. While chain restaurants were able to get their their loans small businesses like hers were left to fend for themselves. To make matters worse Chicago has taken some of the strictest lockdown measures in the country. Some businesses were able to at least survive during the summer if they had outdoor space for outdoor dining but Delta is in area where outdoor dining is not an option. So the Penny has pretty much only been able to rely on take orders. Much of the business came from church goers on Sundays since there is a large church in the same building but as you know that business was completely wiped away when our local government shutdown churches and then allowed them later to have a limited capacity. She has no where else to turn and during this new period of the strict lockdown measures it’s just gotten worse. You'd expect that if our Mayor and Governor expect our small businesses to take a major financial hit in order to save lives they would at least ensure that these businesses weren't going to go under. Considering the tremendous sacrifice they have made for the greater good, they have been one of the most mistreated groups throughout this pandemic. Sure the government can bail out big hotel chains, cruise lines and airlines but when it comes to the little guy, they get the short end of the stick. Often times business owners have been forced to disobey the lockdown orders because they simply cannot survive and have no other choice. Then when they choose not to comply the local governments go after them with hefty fines that come on a daily basis and are meant to put them out of business permanently. Sometimes they even threaten jail time as well. The way small business owners have been treat by our local government is criminal. Now she is on the verge of losing her business, a family business, her only source of income. The time has come for us to support our local businesses and ensure that these staples of our communities don't go away forever due to the gross negligence of our elected officials. Elected officials have given us all of the proof we ever needed to know that they are completely useless. To save America, we must save the backbone of America. America was built on small businesses and instead of thinking that large corporations and big banks are too big to fail, we instead should be realizing that our local businesses are, in reality, the ones that are way too big to fail. Unless you'd like every street corner to look the exact same, with a Starbucks, McDonald's and 7/11, help us to start saving our local businesses starting with Delta. If you can donate whatever you can spare it would be forever appreciated. If you can't spare anything please at least share this on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or whatever other platforms are out there. Thank you for your time and God Bless!
