Help Save Constance:
While snowed in on our remote mountain property, we spent five terrifying hours fighting to keep our sweet dog Constance alive after a sudden and devastating attack.
Hi everyone, my name is Kelsy. My husband Huckleberry, our children, and I live in a rural off-grid mountain area near Loon Lake, Washington. Our little family also includes four beloved dogs, six cats, two rats, and four ducks who are truly part of our home and our hearts.
One of our closest neighbors has a dog named Mya, who has visited our home almost every day for a long time. Over time, she bonded with our family and especially with our sweet girl Constance, and the two became absolute best friends.
On Friday, March 13th around 1 PM, something completely unexpected and heartbreaking happened.
What started as what looked like normal playful interaction suddenly turned violent. Mya unexpectedly became aggressive and severely attacked our beloved Constance, leaving her to die with life-threatening injuries over the cliff of a mountain side.
To make matters worse, this happened the day after a severe winter storm, and our mountain property was completely snowed in. Our driveway was blocked and the nearest emergency veterinarian is over an hour away.
We were suddenly in a nightmare situation with no immediate way to reach medical help.
For five terrifying hours, my husband, kiddo and I did everything we possibly could at home to keep Constance alive using the limited supplies we had. We had to fight through panic, grief, and fear while trying to stabilize her until we could finally get help getting off our property and to a veterinarian.
Those were the longest hours of our lives.
When we finally made it to the vet, Constance required emergency life-saving surgery.
She suffered:
• Severe neck and throat trauma
• Extensive soft tissue damage
• Extreme blood loss
• Kidney complications
• Multiple deep bite punctures throughout her body
The emergency surgery alone unexpectedly cost over $3,000, and unfortunately that is only the beginning of what her recovery will require.
Because we simply cannot afford another several thousand dollars in hospitalization, Constance had to come home after only about 24 hours at the veterinary clinic, and we are now doing everything we can to manage her recovery at home.
Right now Constance is still fighting. She currently has:
• Multiple drain tubes placed in her neck
• Stitches throughout her body
• Significant swelling and trauma
• A long and painful healing process ahead
She must return to the vet in 5 days to have her drain tubes removed, and again 10–14 days later for stitch removal. Beyond that, she will require extensive follow-up care, medications, therapy, and additional surgeries.
Due to the extent of the tissue damage, parts of the repaired areas may become necrotic and die, which could require up to two additional surgical procedures during her recovery.
Constance is 9 years old and one of the most incredible dogs we have ever known. She is a beautiful mixed breed with the sweetest soul. She loves her siblings and our family, but she has an especially special bond with her dad, Huckleberry.
She is bright, spunky, and full of personality with just the right amount of sass and those funny little snorts that always make us laugh.
Constance is incredibly intelligent and well-trained, and over the years she has helped so many people emotionally and mentally with her gentle spirit and loving presence.
She means the world to us.
We are asking for help during this incredibly difficult time as our family tries to give Constance the medical care she needs to survive and heal.
