Christopher Lynn Newman is an icon in the Portland music scene as well as in many parts of Europe. Chris has been credited by journalists as The Grandfather of Grunge music. With his myriad of bands, Napalm Beach, Snowbud and the Flower People and the Chris Newman Deluxe Combo (to name a few), Chris has recorded and released over 60 albums throughout his career. He’s an inductee into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, as well as a beloved brother, uncle, and friend to all who knew him.
Chris passed on May 9th, 2021 from terminal cancer. While death is always hard on those left behind, the circumstances surrounding Chris’s death were beyond despicable. It is the belief of those who knew him best that the Last Will and Testament he signed - literally days before his death — was coerced. The sole executor and sole recipient of Chris’s Estate has been left everything – including Chris’s music and remains. This person has been documented by Adult Protective Services as being abusive to Chris while he was in their care as an elderly, terminally-ill vulnerable human. Chris’s family, as well as friends who have known him more than 30 years, have reason to believe that the will he signed five days before he passed was signed under duress and undue influence perpetrated by this individual, who completely isolated Chris from all friends and family - allowing him to see no one during his illness.
Sadly, in the midst of this devastating loss, Chris's family has now found themselves in the position of needing to retain legal representation to recover the things they know Chris intended them to have. This includes not just personal effects, but all of the rights to his music, as well as his ashes. The sole recipient refuses to engage or communicate in any way with his five siblings – all of whom he loved dearly.
