Help Save Charlie: Urgent Medical Fund

Hi, my name is Nicole and this is really hard for me to do. But my family and I have exhausted all of our funds and we need help to save our beloved four-legged family member.

A quick little rundown. My mom ended up with a detached retina at the beginning of this year and we had to see a retina specialist. She ended up having to have surgery. For most people, their insurance will cover it or at least some of it, but unfortunately, in my mom's case, her insurance wouldn't cover anything, so we had to pay out of pocket for everything. We paid over $15,000 for her surgery alone. That doesn't include any of her office visits, laser treatments, or any of the injections that she's had to have done. So our poor family has already put out so much money to help restore my mom's eyesight, and now, one of our poor babies is sick and needs help, and we are running out of funds to be able to help him. Anyone who owns a pet can agree that they're truly like family, and when your beloved pet gets sick and has to go to an emergency vet, you just want the best care possible at any cost. And this is where my family is right now. Our beloved Charlie got sick quickly and we are at a loss trying to save our poor boy.

We took our boy to our vet on Tuesday, July 22, and they did some lab work. On Thursday, July 24, they called us and told us that we needed to get Charlie to a 24-hour emergency vet as his kidney function is not good at all and that they need to do continuous IV fluids on him to help flush out his kidneys, but he needs to be on close monitoring as Charlie already has heart issues. So we took our boy Friday morning to the emergency vet in doggie ICU.

I will continue to update the page as we get updates on our baby boy.

We love our boy more than anything; he is our family! And we want to do everything we can to help him. So anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated, as well as any prayers to help heal our sweet, sweet boy Charlie. Please please share our story in hopes others may want to help donate to save our precious boy.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading this and helping my family and me in a time of need. We are truly grateful. ❤️

Friday, July 25, after we left our boy at the emergency vet, we got a call that they did an ultrasound to check our boy's kidneys and found out our poor boy only has one kidney! So the poor little guy is fighting even harder because he only has one. They also did some more lab work and found out that his pancreas levels are through the roof, so he also has pancreatitis.

Saturday, July 26, we went to see our boy and even with all the pain meds that he's on, he was still happy to see his family! He is still so sick and needs to be continuously monitored. His levels hadn't changed too much, so we will see what the next day brings.please continue to pray for our boy.

Sunday, July 27, we got a call from the vet saying that our boy was starting to get some congestive heart failure (CHF) because of all the fluids he was getting. So that means that his lungs are starting to fill up with some fluid because of his heart condition. So they asked me if they could put a little doggy NG tube in him. This tube goes into their nose and down into their stomach so that the fluids will go straight into his stomach. Also, because Charlie hasn't eaten anything really since Friday, they would like to give him some food through that tube. Anybody who's ever been sick knows the only way that your body is going to heal is if you stay hydrated and if you eat, so we of course said yes, please put the tube in to help our boy! Update Sunday July 27 that evening When my family and I went to see him in the ICU Sunday evening, he was still pretty sedated from when they had to put the tube in, but he was wagging his poor little tail through it all.

Monday, July 28, we got an update from the vet about our boy. His kidney numbers are starting to trend down, which is good. He still won't eat for them, so they have to give him some more food through that tube. He still needs to be monitored for a couple more days to try to get him stronger so that he can come home.
Update- Monday July 28 we went to go see Charlie that evening, and he actually looks so much better than our previous days that we had seen him. He was a little bit more awake but still very drowsy. He still wouldn’t really eat for anybody so they have to continue to give him food through his tube every six hours, but we are hopeful that tomorrow will be a better day! Prayers for our sweet boy!

Update Tuesday July 29 - got an update from doctor. Charlie’s creatinine levels have not changed which is not what we all want. We want his numbers to go down and he still seems like he’s uncomfortable and kind of in pain. They were trying to wean him down off of some of the pain meds but unfortunately they’re not going to be able to right now. They also added an anabiotic as a preventative and they are going to try to start him on a low-dose of IV fluids to try to help flush out his kidney and pancreas. Update Tuesday July 29 -we had our visit with Charlie that evening! Our boy finally started to eat for them! He had a little bit of chicken and some baby food, which is a start thank goodness, and he’s drinking a little bit more on his own. He still on the tube feeds for now because he still not eating enough and they’re putting some water through his little NG tube to help give him some more hydration. They did start to wean him off of some of the heavy pain meds and are trying other ones. When we went to go see him, he actually ate for us even just a little bit and he was drinking for us. And the nurse told me that they bladder scanned him and his bladder was a little full so they were worried that he was retaining urine so before we left, I asked if we could try to walk him outside to see if we could get him to go and praise the Lord. He went for us and he went a lot lol thank goodness ! Praying that tomorrow his numbers will go down and he will continue to eat for them and drink.

Update Wednesday July 30- got the doctor update in the morning. Physically, they said he looks much better. He’s much more alert and he’s eating a little bit more for them and drinking more, which are all good things. The only bad thing is that number wise. His creatinine level has actually gone up which is not good. So we are going to try to add his IV fluids a little bit more but still at a very slow rate though. They have weaned him off of all of the heavy pain medication but if they see that he’s starting to look uncomfortable, they can just give him a shot of some thing heavier. He still on three nausea medication‘s and his heart medication he’s also going to the bathroom outside on his own which is good, because if he stops urinating, then there’s a bigger problem, so let’s hope and pray that never happens! Update Wednesday July 30-we had our visit with Charlie that evening! Our boy definitely looks much better! He came in walking into the room with his tail, wagging and happy to see us! He even gave us kisses for the first time in days! The nurse had just fed him so we did try to feed him a little bit of food, but he really didn’t want much. He did eat a little though, but he drank some water for us. Charlie is starting to look like our Charlie, which is wonderful we just hope and pray that his numbers tomorrow come down or our boy will have to stay there for another night. We did take him out again before we left and he had urinated for us. All the nurses and doctors love him there! He is so loved and well cared for not only at home, but there as well! Pray our boys numbers come down for tomorrow’s lab work!

Update Thursday July 31st - got a call from the doctor this morning that Charlie’s creatinine numbers unfortunately have gone up. He looks good again it’s just his numbers that are crap. He’s now off all of the heavy pain meds, just on the nausea medication and his heart medication. He has been eating a little bit more for them and drinking and going potty outside for them. We have to make a decision if we are going to keep him there or we’re just going to try to bring him home and try to Hope and pray coming home will help to heal him. Because my family and I do think that because Charlie has been more aware, awake and alert that he’s getting stressed out being there and it’s also causing his numbers to go up because he’ll see us for like an hour or so and we have a great visit and then we leave him. And although we tell him we will be back the next day and that everything’s okay, unfortunately cannot hear us because he is deaf.
My family and I have made a decision and we are going to bring her boy home! Update Thursday July 31st- we are bringing our boy home that evening! They went through all of his discharge paperwork and they showed us everything that we have to do and all the medication’s that we have to give him. We have to bring him back every couple days to get his blood levels checked. Hoping and praying our boy is on the healing path!

Update Friday, August 1 - we had a pretty good day, and evening. We are so glad to have our boy home, we missed him so much! We have a schedule for all of his medication’s since he gets so many. And he is eating and drinking and going outside to go potty for us. Hoping and praying we are on the healing path and his lab numbers when we take him on Saturday will be good.

Jasper and Charlie … brothers together again!

Update Saturday, August 2- we had a pretty good morning. He took most of the meds without giving us a hard time. He still drinking and eating pretty good which we are happy about and he is going potty outside and moving around pretty good. Took Charlie early that evening for his follow up appointment and lab work, and his creatinine levels went down! Which is good and we are very happy about the doctor says he looks pretty good and will see them at our next follow up on Tuesday.

Laying on the couch with his cat brother gizmo.

Update Sunday, August 3-we are having a pretty good day. Charlie is taking all of his medication‘s. Give us a little bit of a hard time but not too bad. We tried different foods today to get them to eat but the only thing that he’ll eat for us is some boiled chicken, he turns his head away to some of the other stuff or he’ll take a little lick and that’s it. Praying or a boy continues on the path of healing and his numbers go down when we go to the doctor on Tuesday.

Update Monday, August 4- having some trouble today getting his medication’s in him. Gave him the meal stimulant medication, once we gave him that we had to wait a little bit for it to kick in and then we were able to get him to eat some boiled chicken and get his medication’s in. We did notice that morning that Charlie’s breathing is a lot more labored and it’s making us a little nervous going to see how the day goes but may take him back to the emergency vet to get checked out. He also didn’t really want to eat much that evening. Update that evening - ended up taking our boy to the emergency vet because his breathing just wasn’t right. And he just looked sad. They pretty much took us right back as soon as we got in because they know Charlie was just there for a long time. They did x-rays and checked our boy out. But the x-ray showed nothing which is good, no congestive heart failure, and no aspiration pneumonia. But it still doesn’t tell us what’s going on with our poor boy. They also added another meal stimulant to try to get him to eat more. So we will try that tomorrow. Hoping and praying tomorrow will be better and his numbers will be better when we go back for his follow up.

our sweet boys! Brothers together Jasper and Charlie

Update Tuesday, August 5- our boy boy is looking sad. His breathing is still rapid and heavy. I called the vet to see if I can get an earlier appointment which, thankfully they were able to do. Had a hard time giving Charlie his medication’s. He kept turning his head to everything I tried to give him and he really didn’t want to eat anything for me and I literally tried everything! Not sure what is going on with her poor boy, but please keep praying for him. Update after we saw the vet- his doctor looked over his chest x-ray from evening before and they still didn’t see anything but they see what we are talking about with his breathing so they did another X-ray just to make sure that nothing changed, and nothing thankfully did but still doesn’t explain the breathing. Unfortunately, his creatinine level went up even higher higher and it’s almost in the double digits. Which is really not good at all and he is very high risk right now, and the vet staff was able to help me out and give him all of his medication‘s that I was unable to give him. Thy gave him them through injections. We took our boy home trying to keep him comfortable and hoping we can get him to eat. Thankfully we did get him to eat but only a tiny bit, just not enough. We are also being realistic and we know one of the signs that they are trying to tell us that they are ready is they stop eating so we are hoping we don’t have to make a devastating decision soon. Hoping our boy has a better day tomorrow. Please continue to pray for him.

Update, Wednesday, August 6- we unfortunately are not having a very good day. I was only able to get his heart medication in him, and that was only because I had to try to force it in his mouth and get him to swallow it. I gave him one of the meal stimulants, hoping that will help and trigger his brain and belly to want to eat. Tried for hours to try to get our poor boy to eat something. I literally tried everything, baby food, his brothers dog food, his old dog food, his new dog food, canned dog food, boiled chicken, pasta, rice, and I even tried cat food. But still nothing. He just turns his head everything I try. So gave him the other meal stimulant hoping that would help. Really hasn’t eaten anything since Monday morning/early afternoon and it now Wednesday! He’s just looking so sad and weak we carry him for most part now. Tried all the foods again and still nothing. Once my family came home that evening they all tried as well, but still nothing. We kept asking for signs to let us know when it was time and the not eating was our biggest sign and his poor sad look on his face just said it all. Our boy was such a pleasure and the sweetest, loving, craziest, wild little man and we don’t want our poor boy to suffer. He doesn’t deserve that! So we unfortunately called our vet and talk to them and made an appointment that evening to set our poor boy free. Free of pain, no more poking, no more prodding, no more suffering… Just to be at peace.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2025 we had to put our sweet baby boy Charlie down after almost 8 (His 8th Birthday would have been Tuesday August 12, 2025) wonderful years. He was the sweet little shadow who followed you everywhere, our little ball player, lol our little crazy man with all the squeeky toys, the kissing bandit, our little elvis lip, our little sneak who had no fear and one of the best snuggle bugs you could have ever asked for. Our nephew loved him and his brother Jasper so much, and Charlie loved when Brooks would throw his toys for him. When our family goes on vacation we mean everyone that includes our four legged family, Charlie got to go down the shore two times and down to Disney!
Our poor sweet boy got dealt a crappy card in life with being deaf but that never stoped us from loving him so much and it never stopped his wagging tail and running to come to greet you anytime you came home, especially with one of his toys and just being our crazy wild Charlie! Recently, our sweet boy got real sick and found out not only did he have advanced kidney disease but he was also born with only ONE kidney! Yes, just one! He was also diagnosed with pancreatitis and he already had a heart murmur. We really tried our best to try to save our boy and give him a fighting chance and we thought we were on the healing path but unfortunately our boy’s body was just so tired and sick that we had to make that terrible but humane decision, to put our boy at peace. We miss you so much already my sweet boy, please Keep watch over your brother Jasper I know he misses you terribly! I know all our other sweet furbabies were waiting for you at rainbow bridge, Especially my baby girl Ariel, our boy Jake and our Dukie Boy.……You will forever be in our hearts. Until we meet again my sweet little boy ....
“You know goodbyes aren’t forever.”

Huge, thank you to all who have donated already to our goFundMe to help with our sweet boy’s medical bills! We love and appreciate you all so much!
