Help Save Charles Don Flores from Wrongful Execution

Is Texas about to execute another innocent man by ignoring contemporary science?

In a case fraught with all the hallmarks of a wrongful conviction, Charles has been denied a new trial and time is running out.

Organized by Charles’ longtime friends and supporters, this campaign comes from a place of deep urgency and love. We are asking you to help Charles Don Flores, a man who has spent over 26 years on Texas death row for a crime he did not commit (For details visit https://www.freecharlesflores.com/the-case/overview).

This coming April will mark 27 years since Charles lost his freedom and was condemned to die by the State of Texas. Twenty-seven years of isolation in solitary confinement, of waiting, and of hoping that the truth will finally be heard. To honor the time that has been taken from him, we’re asking supporters near and far to donate $27, one dollar for each year Charles has spent fighting for his life, and build upon that to the extent you are able.

Every dollar raised will fund critical investigative work in an effort to prevent the execution of someone who merely wants a chance to prove his innocence. “Proving innocence” should not be what the law requires in America, but that is where things stand now in Texas. His access to traditional appeals ended long ago. For any Texas court to consider his case, he must solve a mystery by digging up overwhelming proof of who actually perpetrated the crime he was convicted of years ago. That conviction was only possible because of significant official misconduct. For example, if the case against him had ever been legitimate, why did the police and prosecution need to “hypnotize” a witness who then made a mid-trial “identification” when she had initially described seeing men who looked nothing like Charles and had failed to pick his recent image out of a photo lineup? And why did the prosecution need to keep the actual (confessed) shooter, the son of a local police official who was given a secret lenient plea deal, from the jury if his story was credible?

Your contribution is more than a donation. It is a stand against injustice, a lifeline to a man running out of time, and a powerful message that his life matters. The funds will go directly to support the pro bono legal campaign on his behalf. The State of Texas does not provide legal representation or resources to those on death row after their first round of appeals ends–unless and until the state’s highest court decides to grant a new trial. It is a deadly “Catch-22”: indigent individuals on death row, including those like Charles who have always maintained their innocence, have no resources to prove their innocence unless and until the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals decides that they have already proven their innocence…

Please help us give Charles the chance he’s been denied for far too long.

To express his sincere gratitude, all donors, unless you prefer to remain anonymous, will receive a handwritten thank you note from Charles himself.
