Hi my name is Simon and best friend Baxter and I had almost finished a 6 month Australian journey back and forth over the Nullarbor, tp Perth and Esperance. We had been sleeping rough as I am on workcover payments and the fuel costs particularly lately have been huge. The reason for my visit to Perth was to support my elder brother who was in Royal Perth Hospital.
it was the best and worst experience, beautiful places and mostly lovely people. I was diagnosed with heart failure however Baxter (Blue Heeler/Whippet) was always there urging me on, biting my toes to get up and get him his morning coffee. He is so loveable, loving and friendly to one and all.
Tonight we were camped near Tumut, only 2 hrs from home. Almost 3,500kms done in anbout 2 weeks. At this Tumut park. I had turned Baxter’s back window down so he could do one of his favourite things watching possums. It was very dark and all of a sudden Baxter jumped out the window which he has never done before. Before I knew I heard a thud behind our car however did not even consider it was Baxter being run into or over.- he never goes in the road by himself. Then he didn’t come to me when I yelled his name. I saw I figure ahead using a torch and my stomach turned inside out when my own head torch saw a stream of blood on the road.
Then I saw Baxter - laying motionless, internal organs protruding, a back leg obviously fractured. I knelt down next to him in the cold bitumen, a young man standing above me - “I’m sorry” he said “ he came out of nowhere” I said it’s not your fault mate as I look over Baxter thinking he was surely dead. As I started to cry I felt his stomach lightly- there was slight movement . I couldn’t believe it. He was definitely breathing, so much blood loss, his intestines, spleen and liver all visible- I couldn’t believe it. “ What should I do” I asked, frantically almost begging for the right answer. The blolke said, “My dad lives 5 minutes away, he has a gun, do you want me to get it”? Looking at Baxter right there motionless and his insides on the road I thought he couldn’t last another 5 minutes and he may be in so much pain. Crying I said “ ok get the guns” the bloke walked off. to his car and drove away.
In an instant all the beautiful memories of Baxter came flooding down ding into my mind, his loyalty, his fun loving nature and love for everything. I got up ran to my car and grabbed bandages from the first aid kit and a blanket, I wrapped his stomach picked hi
up and placed him in the car.
I drove quickly to the Tumut Vets about 10 minutes away, it was 8.50 pm- no one there and no one answering the emergency number, the same for Gundagai Vet, no answer on the emergency phone. Wagga was 60kms away with a 24 hr vet- I phoned ahead and raced there as quick as I could, however sadly so sadly thought Baxter could not endure that journey and still live. He did, he’s strong he’s fit, only 18 months old - his strength had helped him survive so far but the next 48 hrs are crucial for his survival. The Veterinarian is hopeful he will pull through however he is currently in an induced Coma and requires cat scans and major surgery to secure his internal organs from i n place.
its 12.45am at the moment and im sorry if im not making sense, my eyes are heavy.
I don’t have pet insurance and IM am so sorry for that.
Baxter deserves. to live. His life was just beginning and how s life is precious- he is currently fighting now himself. Ge needs help - I have no way of ng the attached Vet fees, we all have our opinions however I am begging you all to donate anything for Baxter to have a chance at life.
Thank you in advance.
