My name is Cliff, and I’m fundraising to help cover the emergency veterinary surgery and ongoing vet costs post surgery for Badger, the beloved cat of my client Katherine, who is unable to work due to disability, and has dealt with theft, and other unfortunate circumstances this year.

Katherine’s 19-year-old cat, Badger, has been a part of her life for over 18 years. He’s more than just a pet—he’s her closest companion, offering comfort, joy, and a sense of normalcy despite the challenges Katherine faces due to her medical condition. Badger is incredibly loving, enjoys pats, cuddles, and even walks around the neighborhood, climbing trees along the way. His playful, sweet nature has earned him a dedicated following on Instagram with over 2,500 followers who adore him @badgerthedirtcat.

Katherine, a client of mine living with disability, has been struggling with Dysautonomia and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Due to these conditions, she is unable to work and relies on support workers to assist her with daily tasks. Despite these challenges, Badger has been a constant source of comfort and stability in Katherine’s life. They share an unbreakable bond, and Badger’s presence greatly improves Katherine’s quality of life.

The Emergency Surgery, Ongoing Costs & Theft

Unfortunately, Badger’s health took a sudden turn for the worse in January 2025. When he started vomiting, wouldn’t eat, and appeared to be in severe pain. Katherine rushed him to the emergency veterinary hospital, where it was discovered that he had an intestinal obstruction. The condition was life-threatening, and the only way to save him was through urgent surgery to remove part of his bowel. The surgery went ahead, and Badger is now in recovery at home, but the cost of the procedure was enormous—around $15,000. On top of this, the ongoing monthly vet expenses continue to add up.

Katherine recently experienced a heartbreaking theft when thieves stole her purse while she was enjoying a long-awaited return to the ocean. After five years of not being able to go into the water, she finally had the opportunity to do so with her support worker. Unfortunately, during this special moment, her purse—containing two phones (one for Badger content), her prescription glasses, wallet, cash, and other essential items—was stolen from the beach. This devastating loss not only took away her personal belongings, but it also wiped out countless irreplaceable photos and videos of Badger.
