Help save a hospitalised single mum from homelessness
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Holly. I met the amazing Lee when she was struggling to survive as a single mum living as a rough sleeper in Fitzory. What could have been a brief interaction turned into a beautiful enduring friendship, and my admiration for her strength, resilience and intrinsic kindness continued to grow as I learnt about the things she has been through.
Women middle aged and older are the fastest growing demographic experiencing homelessness in Australia. Like so many women, Lee ended up homeless after leaving an abusive partner. He stole all the money she had saved, leaving her without the finances to afford rent. After a decade on the waitlist for government housing, and unable to access support through Centrelink whilst she lacked a fixed address, Lee a month ago found a rental she could afford, put in her Centrelink application for support, and thought things were looking up. Unfortunately life wasn't done throwing her curveballs and she experienced heart issues and a seizure, sending her to hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.
Due to these medical issues she can't make the money she needs to pay rent and she is at risk of losing her rental, and hence also the chance to finally get support via Centrelink as well. After fighting so hard to improve her and her daughters life, it breaks my heart to think it could all be derailed so easily through something so out of her control. I'm asking anyone who has the money to please consider donating to help cover 3 months of rent, giving Lee time to get her support payments approved, and improve her health, whilst keeping a roof over her and her daughters head.
