My best friend, who is like a sister to me, has been going through very tough times with her Dad. He has been diagnosed with severe aortic valve disease and also lives with diabetes, which makes open-heart surgery far riskier. His doctors strongly urge to do TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) — a modern, minimally invasive procedure that could save his life.

In most cases, this procedure is covered by public insurance in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, because of how the system works, coverage is only granted to patients officially labeled “high-risk.” Even though her father’s health and diabetes makes surgery more dangerous, he doesn’t meet all of the insurance’s strict criteria. As a result, the insurance company has refused to cover his procedure, leaving him responsible for the full cost — approximately $25,000.

It’s incredibly hard to accept that something so vital can come down to bureaucratic rules and technicalities. His doctors believe this is the safest option for him to survive, yet without financial help, we can’t move forward with the surgery.
