Uchenna Chinwuko, our cousin’s daughter, a 24year old undergraduate at University of Nigeria Nsuka, was recently diagnosed with congenital heart disease with two septal defects (holes in the heart), one in atrium and another in the ventricle, left to right shunt, with right heart failure and valvopathy.
Opportunities for earlier diagnosis were missed even though she had made numerous hospital visits from infancy. She is currently failing to thrive, very symptomatic and unable to carry out normal daily activities, let alone completing her undergraduate studies. She has been reviewed by the cardiology team at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital who recommended hospital in India as they lack the capability to successfully repair the defects.
Contact has been established with the recommended hospital in India, Innova Hospitals. Medical documents have been reviewed and open-heart surgical repair proposed, with estimated medical cost. The family does not have the means, unfortunately, especially when logistics of travelling with a parent is factored in; and may have to watch their daughter die. The thought is heart breaking. We solicit your help, please.
