My name is Oluwatimileyin Sarah Alli-Brown. In Yoruba, my native language, Oluwatimileyin means "God is behind me." My brothers and I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, but our parents were born and raised in Nigeria. Hardship came knocking on my door when, Unfortunately, my dad had to return to Nigeria due to his lack of documentation.
Knowing that my father would not be able to see me graduate college and that my mother was struggling to support my siblings and me despite working two jobs— This became a big motivator for me to graduate from college.
I am currently majoring in broadcast journalism at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale but received the opportunity to transfer to Florida A&M University (FAMU). I have ambitious goals to become a news anchor or reporter, and this move is a crucial step towards achieving them.
As a Black broadcasting journalist, my career aspirations are deeply rooted in the desire to use the power of storytelling to uplift and empower marginalized communities. I envision myself working in both traditional and digital media platforms, producing content that highlights the richness and diversity of the Black experience, while also addressing important social, political, and cultural issues.
One of my main goals is to become a trusted voice in the media landscape, someone who viewers can rely on for accurate, insightful, and empathetic reporting. Whether it's through investigative journalism, documentary filmmaking, or hosting my own show, I want to leverage my platform to amplify the voices of those who are often overlooked or misrepresented in mainstream media.
FAMU would not only provide me with a top-notch education in journalism but also connect me with mentors, peers, and resources that understand and support my unique journey as a Black aspiring journalist.
However, pursuing this dream comes with significant financial challenges. your contribution will help cover tuition, housing, books, and travel expenses as I transition to FAMU. Your support will not only help me achieve my educational goals but also empower me to make a meaningful impact through my work in journalism.
Any contribution, big or small, will bring me closer to my dream of becoming a voice for the marginalized and a beacon of truth in the media landscape. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for considering supporting my journey.
With gratitude,
Oluwatimileyin Sarah Alli-Brown
