Help Sarah care for her mother’s medical crises
Donation protected
Our friend, Sarah Powell, has just returned to Indiana for the second time in less than a month to care for her mother, Janet. After a medical emergency and intensive care unit hospital stay at the end of January, Janet was sent home only to return to the ER and ICU less than two weeks later. She currently requires round-the-clock care in her home.
Although Janet has had tangible support from her extended family in the Midwest, her daughter (and our dear friend) Sarah is the only one available to support Janet in her Indiana home during her extended recuperation.
As an on-the-ground presence, Sarah will be the primary caregiver for Janet, while also seeking answers for a number of health issues, dealing directly with insurance, and tracking down all available elder services and aid to accommodate Janet’s new care requirements.
In truth, Sarah has been her mother's primary support for several years. As Janet gets older, her health issues and financial dependency on Sarah, her sole child, have only continued to increase.
Unfortunately the decision to give Janet the care she needs cost Sarah her job. Her company was unable to accommodate her extended leave request, and as she’d worked there less than 12 months she had no federal or state mandated family leave protection. Her job and health benefits ended February 29.
While Sarah’s skills and experience as a BCBA put her in hot demand, she will only be able to seek full-time work when Janet’s health stabilizes and she has a supportive assisted living environment. As Sarah has been a good friend to so many of us, we are all so grateful to help her in this time of crisis.
Our goal is raising $15,000 to cover approximately two months of her salary (which pays for her mother’s apartment), the unexpected costs of multiple rounds of travel, looming medical bills, and other unforeseen costs that inevitably lie ahead. Thank you for giving today!
