As most of you know, I have had Multiple Sclerosis for almost 40 years. It has been only recently that I have experienced the immobility associated with MS. I have been blessed by God! Many who have this disorder have endured much more than I and debilitated quicker than I have. I am asking for donations, not to help with my MS but to have a knee replacement surgery. Last year I had a series of falls that tweaked my arthritic right knee. This resulted in my inability to straighten my leg. It also resulted in pain that I have never experienced with my MS.Unfortunately, this was in my “good” leg, the one I rely on for mobility. I have not been able to stand or walk since April 2020. Needless to say, it has been a frustrating year. I consulted with my Kaiser orthopedist who was reluctant to do knee replacement surgery. He believed that, due to my MS which compromised my left leg, I was not a candidate for knee replacement surgery. I was encouraged to seek a second opinion from an orthopedist outside the Kaiser system. In consultation with others who have been through knee replacement, I came across a doctor who has had great success in this area. In his examination of my medical records and various scans, he came to the conclusion that, since my left leg was the only leg affected by MS, I was a candidate for surgery. Since I am going outside the Kaiser system to get this done, the cost will be out of pocket.
We estimate the cost to be $35,000 + the breakdown is as follows.
Hospital cost $18 – 20,000 depending on nights in the hospital
Anesthesia $2,000
Knee Replacement $3,000
Physical Therapy $5,000
Added Home Support $5,000
The time frame for this Go Fund Me project is short. I am scheduled for surgery on July 21, 2021.
