Sherman, my friend Sara’s beloved 6-year-old cat, suddenly and unexpectedly fell ill on Friday. Sherman has always been a lovable, energetic, and playful little guy, so it was heartbreaking to see him come down with a fever and become lethargic over the weekend. Sara rushed him to the emergency vet, where blood tests revealed his liver values were four times higher than they should be. Despite a round of antibiotics, Sherman’s liver values have not improved, and Sara had to take him back in for hospitalization so he could receive fluids. The next steps include an ultrasound to figure out what’s going on, and a feeding tube since Sherman has not been eating on his own.

Sara is one of the best people I know—she loves her pets more than anything and would do anything to take care of them. For those of us with pets, we know they are so much more than animals; they are family. Unfortunately, medical expenses for emergencies like this add up quickly, but in no world should Sara have to worry about the cost of saving Sherman’s life.
