Let's help Sara and Kain through some challenging times!
When Sara was a young girl, she suffered from a rare condition called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which caused her to go into kidney failure. She spent months in the hospital's ICU and eventually underwent a kidney transplant, receiving her father's kidney.
Over the past couple years, Sara's kidney function declined rapidly to just 3% and she underwent a major surgery to begin peritoneal dialysis. Unfortunately she suffered from complications and landed back in the hospital, and that necessitated the switch to a different type of dialysis.
Sara was finally making traction with her transplant team to coordinate efforts for a new kidney when she was hit with devastating news...she had thyroid cancer. Sara underwent a thyroidectomy and received treatments, and once again prevailed over another obstacle. However, her triumph was short-lived when she was told, due to her history of cancer, she is not eligible for a kidney transplant for another 2 years from now! This means Sara requires dialysis treatment from an outpatient center 4 days a week, each treatment lasting 4-5 hours worth of time and is absolutely physically exhausting. Unfortunately, this is her only life-sustaining option at this time. In addition, Sara's kidney is down to 0% function on its own!
Through these challenges, her son Kain has been by her side as much as possible, watching his mom face adversities and overcome physical and emotional challenges that most of us will never understand. Also alongside Sara was Kain's grandpa, Frank. Frank was a tremendous support for Sara and was one of the most important people in her life - grounding her with unconditional love, encouragement, guidance, medical assistance, and financial stability to remain in her home. Due to Sara's severe medical disabilities, she has not been able to work for nearly 2 years. She is incredibly grateful to Frank and others for their financial support and help with keeping Kain in Pacific Beach with his friends.
Recently, Frank suffered from a massive stroke and passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Not only did this devastate Sara and Kain (as Frank was Kain's best friend on the planet), but it has devastated them financially as well. Without Frank's assistance, Sara will not be able to cover her rent, let alone utility bills, car payments, gas to get her to dialysis treatments 4 times a week, and even food and other expenses for Kain. To say Sara feels the weight of the world on her shoulders is an understatement.
Sara's main goal is characteristic of any mom's wishes - to provide a safe, comfortable, and stable environment for her son to grow and thrive. And this means keeping Kain with his friends and at the same school here in Pacific Beach, CA. Whether Sara is able to find a roommate or two, or she finds another location nearby, one thing is certain - Sara and Kain are in need of financial support right now. In addition to reaching out to various organizations for support, WE can help Sara and Kain through some of these tough times and ease a few of their burdens. They will, of course, need assistance for the next couple years to come - until after Sara’s successful transplant!
Please consider donating whatever amount you feel comfortable with. Sara is humbled by the outpouring of love and support, and appreciates anything you can do to help during this time. Thank you!
