On August 11, 2025, my beloved home island of São Vicente in Cabo Verde was struck by a powerful storm that, only hours later, became Tropical Storm Erin. It left behind unimaginable destruction and, heartbreakingly, claimed lives.

I grew up in Soncent, a place filled with the warmth of its people, the rhythm of our music, the vibrant colors of Carnaval, and a spirit that can only be found in Mindelo. My childhood was spent enjoying evenings at the praça, carefree walks through town, swimming in Laginha, and celebrating the Festival de Baía das Gatas every August. It has always been a place of joy, community, and resilience.

Today, the images we see are no longer of laughter and celebration, but of homes destroyed, streets flooded, and lives turned upside down. Families are without shelter, basic supplies, and in need of immediate help.

We Cape Verdeans are known for our strength and unity, and I know we will rebuild—but we cannot do it alone. I’ve created this GoFundMe to help provide relief and support the recovery efforts for the people of São Vicente.
