On Friday, July 3 a plumber came to repair a leak in the upstairs bathroom toilet. He broke the turn-off valve and left for the day. On Monday, July 6 he came and repaired the valve, which had been leaking aggressively since Friday. Two hours after he left the kitchen ceiling fell down. The walls were so soggy the cabinets almost came down with it. Since then my 91 year old mother and I have been living in a hotel while I deal with contractors of all sorts. So far we have had the cabinets packed out and appliances removed. Big dehumidifiers have been set to dry out as much as possible. Once the walls and cabinets finally come down we will have to have an asbestos abator in to take the floors out of the bathroom and kitchen, an electrician in to fix a short caused by the flood, then the bathroom floor rebuilt (it has sunk) and the kitchen totally rebuilt. Mom's insurance is "dwelling insurance" which covers the walls, ceilings and floor, but not kitchen cabinets, appliances, electrical, plumbing, or, most disturbing, the hotel cost. With asbestos and black mold (not to mention no bathroom or kitchen) we are now in an extended stay hotel for an unknown amount of time. Note to readers: get a copy of your insurance policy, even if you are not the home owner. Read it carefully. Especially if you have an older parent who may not know what is up. We could use money for housing right now, and help with rebuilding after. I can't abandon Mom with this mess.
