My sister is, or was, living her best life on Anna Maria Island with her husband Matt, her mother-in-law Eileen, and her faithful dog Rudder. Since their move to Florida in 2020, they have evacuated several times and had some damage, but never to the extent that Hurricane Helene has caused.
Police officers gave them a ride to their home to look at it for a few hours today. From the outside, it's still standing just fine. Almost everything on the inside is ruined or gone—floated away. Walls, beds, refrigerator, stove, couches, clothes, pictures, televisions, all of the furniture, washing machine & dryer, AC unit, water heater, so much more. Sandy has an incredibly positive outlook, as she says, "We have 3 outfits each, plenty of food, and our cars... we're not hurt, and we will live there again at some point, so life is not bad. I'm trying to wrap my head around it all and figure things out. Looking for a place to live for now and taking it a day at a time. Others have it worse, having no shell of a home to return to."
My sister is a very humble person and never asks for help, even when things are hard for her. They have to start their lives all over... can you even imagine doing that?
Anything you can do to help would be so greatly appreciated.
