Help Sandra Beat Ovarian and Lung Cancer

This fundraiser was created on behalf of Sandra Furbert. Sandra is a retired Bermudian, mother, grandmother, godmother and friend to many. In July 2021, Sandra was having abdominal pain and problems walking far distances. When it became unbearable, she visited her GP who immediately ordered blood work and an emergency CT Scan. The CT scan confirmed a large mass in the pelvic area which was suspected to be ovarian cancer. Sandra was then referred to an OBGYN, who advised her that she will need to travel overseas to have the mass removed as Bermuda does not have an ovarian cancer specialist or surgeon on Island. The appointments and surgery were scheduled at Boston Lahey.

Sandra, accompanied by her children, traveled to Lahey and met with the surgeon. Sandra had a full hysterectomy on August 31st, 2021. It was confirmed the mass was indeed stage 3C ovarian cancer. The doctors also found a spot on her left lung. A biopsy was performed 2 weeks later which confirmed the spot was lung cancer. Sandra is scheduled to start chemo treatments on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021, once every 3 weeks, 6 rounds. We are hoping that the chemo treatments which are for the ovarian cancer, will also treat the lung cancer at the same time. If it does not, Sandra will have to travel again to Lahey for an additional surgery.

Sandra’s insurance covers 75% of the total hospital costs. The remaining balance of 25% is being paid by family and Sandra's small government pension, which just about covered her essential living expenses prior to having a cancer diagnosis. Out of pocket expenses include airfare, hotel and transportation. We do not yet understand Sandra’s road to recovery but we do know she will have many obstacles to overcome. This fundraiser will help assist with the outlined expenses not covered by Sandra'a medical insurance.
