Samuel’s CP Journey

Surrogacy & Birth
Samuel’s birth story is an amazing testimony of the Lord’s faithfulness, goodness and love for us. With both of our children we struggled with infertility, but I was able to successfully carry William, our oldest, to term. Once William was 15 months old we were ready to start the IVF journey again, but the next 3 years brought heartache after heartache as we miscarried 8 of our beautiful children. It was then that the Lord guided us on the path of surrogacy with our last embryo. My sisters best friend, Kacey, had felt the Lord’s calling to carry our baby during the time we were miscarrying and was ready to step up when both Trey and my heart were aligned with surrogacy. At 24 weeks, Kacey’s water broke, but her physician was able to stop the contractions and Samuel cooked in her belly for another 6 weeks. What a miracle that was! At 30 weeks, Kacey went into labor and our precious son, Samuel Warren Simko was born. The Lord had carried each one of us so tenderly throughout the entire journey and felt His presence everyday in the NICU as we watched our sweet boy grow. On his second day of life, one of the Neonatologist sat us down with heartbreaking news. They had found on an ultrasound that Samuel had suffered a bilateral grade IV intraventricular hemorrhage, which is the worst grade hemorrhage one could have. This outcome would increase his chance of developing severe disabilities. At 9 months of age, Samuel’s Neurologist diagnosed him with quadriplegic cerebral palsy (CP). With CP, it can affect any and every muscle in your body, and with the severity of Samuel’s case, it affects mostly all of them.

Therapies & Trexo
Sweet Sammie has been in physical and occupational therapy since he was 4 months old, which to him is now part of his everyday routine. These countless hours of therapies weekly are vital to Samuel’s development, but the progress we see with them is slow. Unfortunately, the therapies that have proven to be most beneficial for Samuel are those deemed “experimental” and rarely covered by insurance. This means we spend tens of thousands of dollars on out of pocket medical equipment and intensive therapies.

This brings us to Trexo. A couple of months ago Samuel trialed the Trexo Robotic’s at his Neurologist’s office. As you’ll see in the picture, Trexo gave us our first glimpse of Samuel being able to take a natural walking stride which brought immense joy to our family! Trexo’s technology is truly one of a kind and provides functional stretching while combining strength, coordination and alignment with each stride Samuel takes. Having the ability to access this equipment at home on a daily basis, could make a significant impact on Samuel’s life by giving him a better chance of independence when he grows older. While chances of him walking are not guaranteed, this technology is the best thing that we have seen to offer his brain a way to understand walking and perhaps over time forge new neural networks that will allow Samuel the ability to regain some degree of independent mobility. There is nothing else on the market today that even comes close! With this being said, Trexo involves a significant investment which is why we’ve had to step out in faith and out of our comfort zone to create this fundraiser.

About this Fundraiser
First and foremost, please don’t feel an obligation to donate toward’s Samuel’s fundraiser. Samuel’s journey has been filled with its ups and downs but through faith and prayer, we have seen God’s miraculous plan unveiled before our eyes. We also recognize everyone has their own financial challenges to navigate so even praying for the Lord’s will to be done with Samuel would be so much appreciated. However, after thought and prayer you do feel called to donate towards Samuel’s cause, we would be forever grateful for any contribution as it is takes a significant investment for the opportunity to take advantage of Trexo’s technology.

All funds received from this fundraiser will go directly towards Trexo’s leasing program. It costs about $15,500 per year to lease and if we raise enough to cover all three years of the lease (~$47,000), then the Trexo will be Samuel’s indefinitely! This means he’d be able to reap its benefits well into his teenage years or for as long as he requires it.
