Hi, my name is Samuel Iradukunda a student at Cornell university, I am from Rwanda In east Africa and that’s where I grew up. I have interest in agriculture, quality education in developing countries and ministry. I always wanted to help my community and see changes; I remember four years ago when I was in high school, I decided to start growing mushrooms because I had skills about mushroom growing, because I was in boarding school, I asked the permission from the school to start growing mushrooms in the school backyard, School gave me the permission and I trained people in the community on how to grow mushrooms and other vegetables; this has been a great opportunity to learn and interact with people but most importantly it gave me an opportunity to get accepted into Cornell college of Agriculture and life sciences. I am now studying Agriculture science and information science, I want to help the world fight food insecurity using sustainable and digital practices that provides us with food now without compromising future generations to make their food, I want to go back in Africa and start a big demonstration farm to help farmers, consumers and policy makers understand more about sustainable food systems, I want to teach the world about Modern mushroom production using Juncao technology. In future I want to start a school in Africa to help young people get the best quality education because I believe in the power of education that most people still lack in many places. It’s always been my dream to come to study in the United States because I always heard that there is the best education system in the world but it was a big challenge to me because five years ago, I couldn’t even speak English; I stepped out of my confirm zone started learning English, did research about universities in United States and engaged in community programs. I was able to get experience and understood what it means to be a global citizen always looking for solutions to big challenges.
I am fundraising for my university charges which are not covered in my scholarship, I ran short of finance to cover the bursary charges. I receive financial aid from Cornell university but some charges remained unpaid and so I was asked to pay for that. I am looking for $4200 to cover the bursar balance of $687, Cornell card balance of $1350 and $1100 for college computer and $900 to buy other important school and hygienic materials I need for college life.
