Hi, I'm Samantha, and I am a disability advocate.
I've been travelling around Australia over the past week to connect with people with disability in crisis.
Currently couch surfing in Melbourne (after travelling to Canberra and Sydney) and plan to do whatever it takes to make people safe in the COVID pandemic.
That includes;
- meeting with decision-makers to advocate for safe conditions in the COVID pandemic
- visiting people with disability and their families to provide help and information
- travelling to regional communities to connect with people who are at risk and identify issues
The approximate costs of this project will be:
- purchasing a small second-hand caravan ($4000)
- interior modification, licensing and fit-out ($3500)
- purchase of a towing vehicle (ute or 4x4, $5000)
- petrol and transport costs ($3500)
Any additional funds will be used to provide RATS for community members and fund trip costs.
This will also be my permanent home for as long as it takes. Caravans are one of the few places where I have felt safe during my life, and this is no hardship for me - I have spent many years camping and caravaning. This project will make it easier to do what I am already doing.
Many people with disability are not connected to the internet or do not have access to technology, so this is an interim solution.
It is not fair or reasonable to expect people with disability to have to shield at home for the rest of their lives. I want to make sure our voices are heard - that we have the right to be safe in the COVID-19 pandemic.
