Sam Simpson from South Australia, most of his friends remember as one of the strongest rowers that Scotch College in Adelaide, South Australia has ever produced. Privately, unbeknownst except to the closest to him, he is a cancer survivor but unfortunately, even with cancer in remission, his health has not returned.
Sam has a complex set of nerve, muscular and digestive issues that leave him unable to eat or properly process food. At times, he loses control of his ability to control his hands and feet, or excruciating pain from damaged nerves in his back leaves him immobilised.
A few weeks ago, Sam experienced another paralysis, but this time not only his hands and feet, but also his face rendering him unable to communicate. Within less than an hour of losing muscular control, Sam had his first grand-mal seizure - something he has never experienced before. Sam was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and placed into an induced coma for approximately 36 hours, with Doctor’s indicating that had he not been hospitalized, he would likely have died.
Despite numerous tests, the source of Sam’s seizure and suffering was not determined. The role of the Emergency Ward is not to cure, but to save lives, and they did excellent work caring for Sam.
Sam has tried to deal with his health issues with Doctors, but the complex nature of the multi-symptom disorders, and Sam is unemployed and with little financial resources has meant that he has had no success in finding adequate treatment. His condition continues to deteriorate and without help, it will only continue to get worse.
We need your help to raise money for Sam to find a new General Practitioner that comes highly recommended so that he can get the referrals that he needs for specialists, and to help ensure that Sam has food in his home. Sam is a rare gem of a man who keeps his pain to himself, too proud to ask for help, but the time has come to make an appeal for a man who would struggle onward with pain that has no end in sight. With the kindness of friends and strangers, we can help Sam find answers to a medical condition that has caused this brave cancer survivor to suffer in silence for years.
The money raised will be used for Doctor’s appointments, ambulance insurance, help to pay important bills, and provide food. The funds will be carefully managed, we don’t know how long this will take, how many Doctors he will need to see, and over what time period. We just want to see him better.
