Hi everyone, I’m Saleha and I’m a Master’s student, graphic designer and support worker for women and girls experiencing violence. As a survivor myself, I am determined to not let anything stop me from successfully completing my LLM in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice. I’m currently working a full-time job and a second part-time job in order to both fund my studies and support my family.
At present, I have an outstanding balance of £5,640 in tuition fees with SOAS University, a sum that is impossible for me to pay given my current situation. My savings was wiped out when I lost my job at the outset of the pandemic. I’m also ineligible for further student loan funding in the UK because of my status as a 3 year part-time student on what is typically a 1 year course. As such, I’m at risk of being forced out of my programme.
The opportunity to pursue my Master’s is extremely precious to me. It is my second chance at my education after significant violence upended my undergraduate experience. As a Pakistani Muslim woman from a low-income background, I have always been committed to a lifetime of fighting for the rights of women, persecuted minority groups and indigenous peoples against the pressures of neo-colonialism and imperialism. My dream is to share the knowledge and critical concepts I’m lucky enough to be learning via activist-based artwork, raising awareness both within and outside of my community of the nuances of racialized neo-colonial oppression. The hope is simple: to provide our people with the tools necessary to not only fight back, but to undo our internalised oppression as well.
Thank you for taking the time to consider helping me continue my education – that gesture alone means the world. I’m thankful for each and every person that goes out of their way to share this with someone else. And to those who do find it possible to contribute, please know that words cannot express my gratitude. I appreciate you all deeply.
In Love & Solidarity,
Saleha
