Help SALA Thrive, A community for Sapphics

Hi all, my name is Moriah. I’m a Black queer nonbinary person from Dallas, TX. After moving back home from college, I found myself searching for community and continued to come up empty. I tried to participate in other groups, but I felt like the only queer community I was finding was catered towards men or white people. Most of these events were centered going out to bars and drinking, something I didn’t always feel comfortable with. 

 I was incredibly lonely, and I wanted to create a social group for queer women and nonbinary people that was inclusive and fun. I wanted to go thrifting, host craft nights, and go to brunch—all events I wasn’t seeing in the Dallas queer scene, especially not for queer women! I remember during a late game night with my only queer friends, M and E, we came up with the name Sapphic and Lesbian Alliance, SALA for short, and the rest is history!  

SALA has been hosting events starting in January 2024. Our first event only had 8 people! Now our events have 30-60 attendees. The growth has been amazing, and so many community members have told me this is exactly what they have been looking for!

 “SALA has given me so much joy; I’ve made so many friends and built a lovely community!” 

 Up until this point, SALA has been funded via crowdfunding or self-funding. But my ultimate goal is to make SALA a completely free community resource. My vision is to make SALA a true third space where the community could come and not have to buy anything or spend any money to participate. I’m starting this fundraiser to build up a financial foundation for SALA so we can host more events without the stress of finances on me or the community. 

 Our current goal is $5000, this is what your donation will be funding:

 -Monthly events and workshops

 -Food and catering supplies

 -Administration supplies like pencils and name tags 

 -Possible venues costs

 -Hiring artists and performers for events
