Hi, my name is Sagan and I am 12 years old. I am a citizen scientist, and I volunteer with Colorado Monarch Ambassadors. We try to help the Monarch Butterfly population because they are currently threatened. One of the ways we help is by tracking migration patterns. This helps us and the monarchs because it allows us a closer look at what problems they face on this long journey. This also helps because there are a lot of things about monarchs that we don't know yet, like approximately how many of the monarchs make it all the way to Mexico. With the new electronic tags, (which are solar powered!!!) not only will we be able to see how many butterflies make it, but we can also tell where a lot of monarchs journeys end, which will allow us to better understand the fascinating migration.

My goal is to get enough money to get a few electronic trackers for the monarchs! An electronic tracker is a very lightweight tracker that goes on the monarch's thorax, so it doesn't affect how they fly! The tracker does not hurt the monarchs. The Bluetooth tracker lets me (and other scientists) gather data about where the butterfly went and how far it traveled that day. This is important knowledge to have because it helps figure out more about the monarch migration to Mexico. Believe it or not, we still have a lot of unanswered questions that the old tracker (see in one of the photos above) cannot tell us.
