Help Sadie Marie Fight Cancer

Donation protected
Sadie is a sweet and adorable, stubborn, strong-willed three year old little girl.  Her amazing parents, Kellen and Erin, also have Stella, Sadie’s big sister, and Scarlett, little sister.  And, most recently, Remi, their new baby Beagle.  To say they have their hands full is an understatement.  They are the most attentive, caring and loving parents you could ever meet and doing such an incredible job raising these three beautiful girls.

On July 4th, 2019, Sadie Marie was diagnosed with Brain Cancer.  On a day when she should have been running around outside with her cousins, eating too many sweets and lighting sparklers, she was in a hospital room with parents worried beyond belief.  On behalf of the family and close friends, we are heartbroken for our gorgeous girl and while sometimes it seems there are no words we can say to provide them with any comfort, this is one attempt to give them just the slightest bit of relief.  We love you Sheldon family!

Around two months ago, Sadie fell out of a tree.  Her mom and dad took her to Seattle Children’s Urgent Care in Everett where they determined she had a concussion.  As time passed, they noticed her balance was off and she ended up falling at least six more times, though not as bad as the tree incident.  She was sent home from school one day and Erin took her straight to Providence ER.  The ER physician thought she was suffering from Post Concussion Syndrome and advised mom and dad to take her directly to Seattle Children’s Hospital if they noticed vomiting or any other out of the ordinary symptoms.  On Wednesday evening, Sadie's symptoms began to worsen and by morning she was getting worse so Erin and Kellen took her down to Seattle Children's hospital, where they immediately ran some tests.

At that point, every parent’s worst nightmare became a reality.  The doctors told Kellen and Erin that Sadie had a tumor in her brain.  They suspected it had been growing for about three months and likely caused her to fall from a tree just a couple months before.  The tumor was causing a blockage of spinal fluid in her brain, which was causing excess fluid and swelling.  The diagnosis is brain cancer.  Brain cancer…in an innocent, sweet and vibrant little girl.  How does this happen?!   The family is still unsure which type of cancer she has and will not know for sure until a biopsy can be done.

The Seattle Children’s team immediately began treatment.  Sadie had her first surgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital on July 4th to place a shunt in her brain to drain the fluid.  Sadie did excellent for that procedure, aside from waking up and being a little irritated that she had to have an IV in her arm.  She was placed on steroids to help with the swelling for the next couple of days with her next surgery scheduled on Monday, 7/8.  On Sunday, they were transferred to Harborview Medical Center, where Sadie’s surgery would take place.

Today, Sadie underwent a lengthy brain surgery at Harborview to remove the tumor.  Her surgery went as planned with minimal disruption to her brain and was extremely successful.  The tissue was sent off for biopsy.  The biopsy results will take about a week to come back so please send your thoughts and prayers to the family during this agonizing time.

As if having to remain strong for your baby girl while dealing with the overwhelming worry and grief, mom and dad have to try and figure out how to explain to Stella what is going on with her little sister.  Luckily they are at an excellent facility where this sort of thing, unfortunately, is dealt with on a daily basis.  Stella was able to enjoy the 4th of July with the rest of her family at the lake and on Friday she went down to the hospital to attend a family orientation where they explained to her what was happening with her sister.  Knowing Stella, I can only imagine how sweet and caring she is being to her little sister and how worried she must be as well.

It's pretty incredible how friends and family, and even friends of friends and acquaintances, rally around a family at a time like this.  Kellen and Erin have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, support, and most of all prayers for Sadie and their family.  Please keep it coming!!  Sadie is a fighter and we know she is going to get through this!

While finances should be the very last thing on their minds right now, it's an unavoidable element in an extensive medical treatment.  There will be out-of-pocket medical expenses, time needed off work, and other ancillary costs.  Please give what you can to a family who is so deserving and hopefully we can provide some tiny amount of relief during this impossible time.
