We originally created this page to help our neighbors, Laremy and Jodi Sacia, with the financial burden of rehab costs resulting from Laremy's long battle with brain cancer. Laremy's battle had left him requiring round- the-clock care.
See Jodi's note below.
My husband, Laremy, was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013, at the age of 39. He went through 2 1/2 years of treatment. And then all was quiet for 5 years. In July 2020, we learned it was back…and back BIG. Another craniotomy left him with aphasia, or difficulty with finding words for speech. A couple months later he suffered a pulmonary embolism. In the spring of 2021, he had a small brain bleed and had to subsequently stop cancer treatment. An MRI a month later showed cancer growth. During his third craniotomy to remove the cancer, they also found infection, so more tissue was removed and antibiotics prescribed. His eyesight was affected and he can no longer drive. After removing the sutures from the craniotomy, he experienced drainage from the incision site. More infection was found and in August on his 47th birthday, he had another surgery to clean out the infection. A week later when the infection wasn’t showing improvement, he had another washout surgery. This was followed by a month of IV antibiotics. Three days after finishing the antibiotics, Laremy experienced a brain hemorrhage. Bleeding in the surgical cavity left him with right side weakness and severe aphasia, and because of this he needs someone to be with him 24/7. After spending a month in the ICU, he spent another month in a rehabilitation hospital to get stronger before coming home. In the mean time, I prepared the house for his return, having hand rails installed, getting a wheelchair ramp, etc. Me and our 2 children, age 8 and 11, were so happy to finally have him home after 2 months! We were just getting into a groove and figuring things out. He was getting speech, physical, and occupational therapy at home weekly. I was able to finish my CNA course (I’m going back to school for nursing). Laremy was home 10 days when his incision site started leaking again. Back to the ER we went and back to the ICU he went for washout surgery #3 on Christmas Eve when yet another infection was found. How much more can he endure? We just want to be together as a family.
